Just curious if anyone has ever used some sort of dog treat...chicken jerky, or dehydrated chicken strip treat for your bird? As I was giving my Pomeranian a chicken treat this morning, I was wondering if I could give something like that to my macaw? It appears to be just real chicken meat..ingredients on bag just say chicken breasts and natural flavorings....

No, none of my fids would ever get dog treats of any kind. I don't trust the manufacturers' labels, too many recalls of dog food. I stick to bird treats or homemade goodies. :)

I used to use natural rawhide (American made) on bird toys and have stopped using even those because of impaction problems reported in some birds.

Wendy,
What do you mean "impaction" problems?? I quite often use rawhide on my home made toys as well....

got it....thank you for the link....I won't be using rawhide any more!...

Becareful of. Some of the jerky treats. Make sure none of the ingredients are from China. Many dogs are sick and some have died. I am in rescue, and get a lot of updates that our media tends to hide.

Jerk is also usually salty which is definitively not suitable for birds.

Plain well cooked chicken (no butter, salt, broth, seasonings etc) would be fine, but its the "natural flavorings" that concerns me. It might have been flavored with garlic, onion, and tomato, which aren't recommended for birds or dogs (but opinions are mixed about that). Considering its a dog treat, it probably doesn't have those flavortings, but whatever flavorings they use you might not be bird safe. You could give him nutri berries, or birdie bread as as treat instead :)
