I have a bunch of toucans not the large ones the tiny ones aracari and toucanets
one has a feather that has just been hanging for days and did not fell off? like its broken but the bird has not pulled it or preened it out wont this hurt the bird? Any idea how to help?
You mean the feather is in the body still, but the shaft broke? If that's the case, just like a parrot feather (or any bird), if they don't preen it and snip it off, it will just dangle there and look out of place until it breaks off. I'm not talking about a blood feather.
I just re-read it, and since you're concerned about it hurting the bird, are you talking about a live growing BLOOD FEATHER that broke? Usually if the bird is no longer bleeding it should be fine, but check it and make sure. I once had a Cockatiel that pulled his own broken blood feathers out by the root every time. I don't think the majority of parrots do that, and I wouldn't think it would be physically possible an Aracari or Toucanet because of their beak? If it still looks like it might bleed, you'll have to restrain the bird and take some needle nosed pliers and yank the quill out near the base with a quick but firm pull.
Is that what you meant? I hope that helped
Edit: I was curious where/how you keep your Aracaris and Toucanets? I've heard the Toucan family is extremely messy! Do you keep them in an outdoor enclosure? Do they have a special type of indoor enclosure?
they dont squirt like a lori people say mynahs are messy also i dont find them messy at all
cockatoos and large macaws i find are most messy because their droppings are so huge and they chew stuff and make a constant mess also pigeons and poultry are very very messy
