Illiger's Macaw (Loki)
So my Illiger's came with a "like new cage", problem is, so did the ants. I found a toy (came with the cage) that had a ton of ants coming out of it and so I removed it, but now I find them coming out of various holes in the cage...

How can I safely eradicate the ants without making the cage dangerous to Loki?

If you ever do get roaches buy adivon from doyourownpestcontrol.com
You might try them for ant stuff too.

I have the answer :)! Orange Guard pet safe bug spray Organic Repellent, Bug Repellent | Monterey Bay, CA An absolute MUST HAVE for bird owners. It works well too.

Active ingredient - orange peel extract. I had to spray it ON Raven's cage. The only thing that died was the trail of ants. Leaves a pleasant orange scent :). I used a ton of it around the dog bowl. There are ant colonies that must live under the house, and as the weather heats up, it's a problem. I love this stuff. The only thing is it's a little oily because of the orange peel extract, but it wipes up easily, and residue keeps on repelling, and smells nice. Kills ants, spiders, etc. I learned about this great product from April (Kiwibird).

Yup, as Julie said get the orange guard since it's just concentrated citrus. I wouldn't spray it directly on toys, dishes or anything he'll have his beak on all the time, but it's totally safe to use around birds unlike other pesticides.

Personally, though, I'd replace the cage ASAP. Ants will make a new home in your home and multiply by the bajillions (which will drive you nuts). When we lived in Arizona, our apartment complex was just infested (despite the landlords best efforts) with sugar ants and they were EVERYWHERE by the billions. Didn't matter how clean you were (and I am a tad on the OCD side with cleaning), if you stored every single food item in airtight containers, sprayed and put the diamotaceous earth around ext... they just swarmed all the time. It was AWFUL to deal with. I shudder thinking about them. I would do anything to stop an ant infestation from ever happening. Not worth a cage IMO.
