Parrots
2 Cinnamon Green Cheeks- Tilly and Buddy(Grouch)
2 Parakeets- Kiwii and Yoshi
Ive always love animals and have had many. Right now I have 2 chichillas, 2 cor snakes(just got them a few days ago.. not too sure about feeding them poor baby mice :(.. ill have to see how that goes.. ehh.. lol) I recently have gotten into birds. Ive had a quaker, parakeet, and parrotlets in the past. The last birf I had was a baby green female parrotlet named kiwii. She was the sweetest bird in the world, but shortly passed away from a unknown cause. It was very depressing... Since then ive paid for 2 cinnamon green cheek conures and im expecting to pick them up sunday. Thy are about 8 months old, and the person im getting them from hasnt messed with them a whole lot. Im told they are dna sexed male and female, unrelated. How should I go about handling them? I know with the quaker I had before(she was about 8 yrs old, never messed with from previous owner) no matter what I did, it seemed like it make her hate me more and more. she bit me over and over. my hands where all brused and had sores from it. A lady who has many quakers ended up taking her home so she would have other quakers to play with instead of being alone all the time. I spent time talking to her every day but as soon as id put my hand near her shed squak and bite and hiss. it was horrible lol.. Ive always loved and wanted conures though(theres this one at the perstore, hes the sweetest little thing :) ). So I thought id get on here and see if I could get any advise from people on here. Thanks!

Amber

Hi Amber and welcome to the forum, lots of friendly folks here to share ideas and info with, well I have to say starting out with two eight month old birds that have had little human physical interaction, especially conures, you'll have your work cut out for you, is there a reason you chose to get older less socialized birds? you stated that there was a sweet bird at a pet store , just curious, I was sitting here trying to think of a solution to the training delema, if they've always been housed together and you keep them that way, chances of successfuly taming and training are pretty slim, if you seperate them it may be just as bad, at least from a noise factor as they will probably continiously scream for each other, I'm hoping someone will step in and give you some good advise on how to proceed, best of luck on your endevor, enjoy your stay here on the forum :)

I chose these two because I know the person im getting them from really good. And as for the pet store conure... Petstore way over price there animals... lol. Hes a sweet bird but they want 400 for him alone. The two im getting are 250, and id love to try and breed later down the road. plus that would give me more money to spend on them for treats, more toys, cage, possible vet ckecks, ect :)
He had actually gotten them from a breeder friend of his, she said once they where out of there cage they where OK, but he hasnt messed with them since getting them.. It seemed more right to me to get these two because if he sold them to someone else, they may be treated as breeders.. Not pets.. And the one from the petstore is more capable to finding a loving home as a pet. I spoil every animal I have as if they are one of my children. I dont know, maybe im wrong? But it just seems like the right way to go

Wow...you have set a challenge for yourself. Okay. Step.1 is to understand that each bird's personality is unique. If you go into this expecting that the sweet bird is the 'right' personality for your two GCCs from the get go all three of you are going to struggle. That said my best bird friend ever was a cinnamon GCC who kept our household in stitches for 20 years. So I like your choice of bird! I am now going to anger you by encouraging you to take only one of them and find a good home for the other. I am not worried so much about them being older (my GCC was a traumatized half bald nine year old former breeder when I got her) but trying to socialize them simultaneously will be nearly impossible. Are you willing to consider this?

Well I hadnt planned on selling one of them or separating, as I was planning o breeding.. I was just curious to see if they could be pets as well as being bred?

Sorry my first response didn't take into account that you wanted to breed. I missed your second post as I was writing mine. I been thinking about you quite a bit and wondering how it might be done. I know what I am about to suggest may stir up some controversy but that will get you some wide opinion which may help you find something useful from the realm of possibilities.

Here is the controversial piece. To be able to have a chance and for the sake of the pair's safety, I suggest that they be clipped. Then if you check my threads to the owner of Tori (under conure forum ) you might try a similar technique after your birds have settled In and gotten used to their new environment and you. I'm worried that they might be territorial rather than comfortable sharing the cage door with your hand and defensive rather than curious. They may have separate personalities and if one is curious and willing to play then exploit that and don't worry about socializing them at same speed. Hope this helps and that folks who disagree with me on the clipping (it is an issue that generates strong emotions) will weigh in with their thoughts and suggestions. Good luck!

Ok, thanks Barbara :). I was thinking about getting there wigs clipped anyway just at first maybe, in case they where to try to fly away. Theres so many cats wondering around out side here, id hate for one of them to accidentally get out and get hurt or killed :(. So I have thought about this. Im getting them around 7 tonight, im excited! Im hoping there not so cage aggressive, but im determined to work with them. None the less, I will love them though lol. I have always adored conures of every sort.
Ive been talking to this other lady with a nanday conure and a sunday conure about taking them in as she can no longer keep them. Im not sure if id be WAY over my head doing this as im getting the cinnamons today too.. But the nanday is 22 years old and not tame, as the sunday conure is about 2 and very tame. loves cuddling, being held, ect. Just trying to see about some opinions from you guys to see if id be getting more then i could handle? (Ive always been a huge animal person, and I use to rescue reptiles about a year ago. So I feel its my nature to help out any animal I find lol.)

Ok I just got home about 20 mins ago with m 2 cinnamon green cheeks, and a sunday conure :) All 3 of them are pretty tame actually! Espically Chilli the sunday. The 2 cinnamons are scared. One of them trys to bite somewhat, but so far the other hasnt bit at all. I think it may be the female? But if i put my hand in the cage she willingly hops onto my finger with no problems. The "male" on the other hand is a bit nippy. he runs to the door of the cage as soon as I take the female out, then he will willingly jump onto my finger :). But all 3 are handleable for right now. This may change I guess after they all settle in. I love them all already though! Chilli is sittig my my shoulder as we speak nibbling on my hair, and eating some millet :)

Chilli is obviously on the left lol. i think the one in the middle is the male cgc and the one on the right is the female cgc.. :)
