Well, I've been wanting to get a bird for years and always held off due to time and never having one fall in to my lap so to speak. I've always favored the large birds, and I think I should know this week if one finally has. I've read up quite a bit, and with the exception of some (and not even all of those) every animal in my house is a rescue of some sort.

The parrot I'm hoping I end up with is an unknown age male blue and gold Macaw. He's been passed around a bit and has the usual issues (from what I've read) loud and bites. My hearing isn't very good anyway, and I'd be surprised if he could do much worse to my fingers than being a millwright in a sawmill has over the years. I'm patient, and at least think I know what I'm in for. Currently has an undersized cage in my opinion, but I will fix that once he is here and weather permiting, an outdoor area where he can actually stretch his wings a bit and torment the crows.

The rest of the 'household' is my better half of the last 5 years, 3 dogs, 3 cats, 6 ferrets, a somewhat oversized saltwater fish set up, and a grumpy old turtle that was being babysat for a month (about 5 years ago)turtle. My house is set up to keep animals seperate if needed, and to start he will most likely start out being in the room with my fish, as I spend most of my time there, and the cats don't go in there. My dogs are harmless unless you are a pizza.

Enough blithering..

K

Thanks for the welcome. It's a full time job with the 'petting zoo' as my neibours refer to it, but as I can't work anymore, they keep me sane. The Ferrets and cats are my GFs and the dogs and fish are mine. At least that's who feeds them. Dee'Ogee is an 11 year old lab/st bernard mix that I got from the pound as a puppie when I finally settled down and bought a house, Bounce is an 8 year old Jack rustle/healer mix that I took on when she was about to be put down after some severe abuse as a pup, and misfit is (4 ish)a retriever that I found in the woods at work. The Kittys are a similar story, The pound, a craigs list rescue, and a kitten (now 4) that I found in the oil change bay at work as a ferral kitten. Ferrets are mostly rescue or retired breeders (I don't breed them). The fish tank is a hobby that has grown a little out of control (its only 4 tanks and 1700 gallons.. ). And the turtle.. well, he's just grumpy and really wants at the fish.

Hi K and welcome to the forum, Kudos to you for considering adopting from a rescue, as far as the cats go, I think the ferrets may be more of a threat than them especially to a macaw, and I know how the fish thing can get out of hand, since moving last year to my new house I've downsized from 24 tanks to just 5, I hope you and the flock enjoy your stay here, good luck on the adoption :)

Well apperently the poor guy was sold on CL so hopefully he has found a good home this time...

and guess I'm still looking.

Don't dispare, good things come to those that wait ;)

Sorry you missed out on the Macaw. You might check the internet for a rescue organization in your area.

I haven't been able to locate one on this side of the mountains. There is a 'crazy bird lady' near here who claims she is a rescue, but I think shes more of a hoarder as she refuses to rehome any of the birds. I volenteered there a couple of times, but other than light welding, and washing dishes, there wasn't much I could do with my disability.

You sound like you would be able to provide an excellent home for a bird of any size (as long as the ferrets can't interfere as they are natural bird enemies ).I loved reading your introduction as it makes my household look sane in comparison. (5....about to be 6...humans speaking two tongues (or really three tongues as the two teens speak some alien language all their own and are a magnet to many, many others of their species ) two horses (1 a rescue )two dogs (both rescues) two pound cats, two ducks (rescues) two conures and two budgies of advanced age. My son also has a simple twenty gallon tank with a big old goldfish but I hate to mention that single entry as it ruins the symmetry of the two by two Noah's Ark thing I have doing otherwise. I tell you all this so you know you have stumbled on a forum where you fit right in with the rest of us crazies and we'd be delighted to help you expand your life to include a bird ...rescued or not.
