Has anyone heard of Ana's Parrots in East Stroudsburg, PA? Anasparrots.com
My friend whose rescued CAG that passed in surgery is looking to adopt a 5-yr old male Grey from them. I think she should ask for references?
 
I Googled t and found a Facebook page and a couple of other things...
Other than, that, I have no personal knowledge.
 
Yes, unfortunately I'm extremely familiar with them...It's Ana's in Stroudsberg and Lily's in Hazelton, they are one in the same, and are not at all parrot breeders, but rather parrot "brokers" who buy extremely young baby parrots from their actual breeders at wholesale prices, thousands of them, and then assembly-line tube-feed them, then sell them for a gigantic profit. At any given time they have young babies of every species of parrot, and they sell them at ridiculous prices. These two women have nothing to do with raising, handling, taming, or feeding their birds at all, and they will not let you actually go to their "facilities", they would rather you pay them $125 or whatever to ship them to you in a crate, but if you contact them and say you want to see a baby bird, they will give you an address to meet them at that is a house, rather than their "breeding warehouses"...Stay away, these two women are practicing exactly what needs to be stopped, and making a fortune doing it. People are always thrilled with them because most of the birds they sell are shipped, and they have no idea what is really going on with them, they think they are the breeders. I can't imagine being happy paying their prices, but once you figure out what they are actually doing, it's horrifying and disgusting...

As Ellen has said 'Ana's Parrots is just one big baby parrot mill! I see ads ALL the TIME.

DO NOT BUY. There have been cases of sick birds coming from them with all kinds of viruses and diseases. DO NOT BUY. She has tons of babies and is always selling for way over what normal prices would be by a LOT.

Tell your friend, RUN, don't walk from Ana's Parrots!
 
Oh one thing to look for is if they have parrots "all the time" yeah bad news. A true good breeder has a flock, of one species, weens, then quickly sells them all. Then time passes with no parrots....

If they are constantly refurbished it's a mill.

Thanks guys. Will alert her pronto! It seems everything out there is a scam. Where can she get a healthy CAG? Royal Bird Company?
 
Seriously, it's common knowledge among bird owners and breeders in central PA, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, lower NY, etc. that Ana's and Lily's are simply a Broker's running 2 huge bird mills at different locations about an hour or so away from each other. If you have ever seen their ads or looked at their FaceBook pages, they quite literally, not exaggerating, have pretty much ANY species of parrot for sale at ANY time of the year. They import baby birds from all over the US, from breeders who are willing to sell them unweaned so they can make a quick profit and move-on to new clutches and not have to finish hand-feeding them. There "ads" read like a damn online-catalog of parrot species for sale, just look up what you want, click, order, pay, and have it shipped to you within the week by air-freight...

It's not surprising that most of their sales are to people from other states far from the northeast who know nothing about them, except that they are very "active" parrot breeders, that's it. So they sell and ship a ton of birds all over the country every single day...If you read their "reviews" posted on their websites and their FaceBook pages by "satisfied customers", the one thing they all have in common is that they are all from states far away from the northeast and mid-Atlantic states, a lot to CA, OR, WA, NM, UT, CO, TX, etc. These people think they are actually breeding the birds they sell, and they think they must be reputable due to the number of birds they sell....Just like a puppymill...

****What's hilarious is that "Ana" started out on her own as a Broker, tried it, it worked well and she made a fortune, and then the word got out about her practices, so then she took-on a partner, "Lily", who is conveniently located in Hazelton, PA, about an hour or so away from Ana in East Stroudsberg, PA, so it looks like they are two totally different "breeders" or operations. They each have their own websites/FaceBook pages,
their own ads, and one is called "Ana's Parrots" and the other "Lily's Parrots". However, if you call one of them to inquire about a bird you are seeing on their website, often they will tell you to "call my partner, as that bird is located at her location", it's like they each have a freaking warehouse and are selling car parts or something, lol...It's not funny, but that's how they operate. "Oh, yes, the Congo African Grey babies, let me check...Yes, they are located at my partner's location in Hazelton, please give her a call at this number, she'll be able to help you out...". Seriously, that's the dialogue...How do I know? Because the Avian Rescue that I've been working at for the last 8 years has taken-in so many birds that originally came from Ana's or Lily's that were surrendered because their new owners couldn't afford to pay thousands of dollars in Vet bills to treat the PBFD Polyoma, Psittacosis, etc. that their birds came to them with!!! So we and other Rescues/Shelters and private bird Foster's end-up taking them in and spending our donations and grant money to pay to treat the hundreds of very sick birds that come from them as babies, young adults, and yes, they sell their "breeder's" for mega bucks too...That's right, in what I fell is their most disgusting act, Ana and Lily actually buy older breeder birds from their breeders, after the poor things have spent their entire lives locked in tiny breeding cages, being bred to death,
and are no longer producing; they buy these old, retired breeder birds for nothing from the breeders, literally nothing, and then sell them as "adult parrots" or even as "proven breeders" to the public at costs over full retail for a new hand-raised baby...

They simply "Recycle" birds, babies and adults....Stay away, far, far away...
 
I think I love EllenD now, but then again I hate anyone that abuses birds, and love anyone that protects them.
 
Your friend's best bet is to either find a reputable Rescue or Shelter and adopt one who needs a loving home, or if your friend wants a hand-raised baby/juvenile, then she should check out sites such as BirdsNow.com and BirdBreeders.com among others, to which private, individual breeders post. Stay away from any "companies" who sell MULTIPLE SPECIES OF BIRDS. That's the best advice I can give you, very similar to the way you should try to find a young, full-blooded puppy, stay away from "companies" who sell multiple different breeds/species, and rather find individual, private breeders who breed out of their homes, and who will not only talk to you at-length about why they breed and what their practices are, but where you can go to their home to see the babies...They won't let you go into the room/aviary where their breeder's are, that's completely normal, as it's a health-risk to the birds, but you should have no problem going into their private homes to interact with their babies...

*****The other places that you MAY have luck, if you're close enough to East Stroudsberg, are the few Bird Shops located in New Jersey who have been in-business for decades, who are very experienced parrot breeders, and who breed all of their baby birds in-house, in the shop, hand-raise/hand-feed the babies themselves, and where you can actually go in any time you want to and not only see the baby birds at different stages throughout the weaning process (you cannot handle them until they are weaned and ready to be sold, but you can watch them through the aviary glass), but you can also see their adult breeder's behind the glass, and speak in-person to their breeders who are there every single day caring for the babies. There are 2 of these dedicated Bird Shops who do all of their own breeding in-house that I'm aware of, where every step of the process can be seen at any time throughout the hand-raising process, including seeing the adult breeder birds sitting on eggs, feeding the babies for the first 2-3 weeks, etc. One of these 2 shops that I'm aware of is located close to Red Bank, NJ, about 30 minutes away, I have been to that one personally and was actually very, very impressed...There's another one that is located in north central NJ, I can't remember the name of it but can find it for you, it's the exact same set-up. They breed all of their birds in-house, themselves, and raise them themselves, and their prices are fantastic, not at all even close to those of Ana's/Lily's...I'll look the two shops up for you...

I know that one of these shops, the first one I spoke of, has a pretty good website that lists all of their currently weaned babies that are ready to go, as well as any they have that are being weaned, and even the ones that are simply eggs being laid on at the moment. They let you put a small deposit down on any born-babies I believe, and they show many, many photos of their breeders, the babies, the aviary, the entire process. They are very transparent and aren't hiding anything. And they've been doing this for decades. I went to see Joan Jett and the Blackhearts along with Jesse Malin at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ a couple of years ago, it was on a Saturday night, so I actually went on Friday and spent the day checking out places, shopping, etc. in the neighboring areas, and this was one of the places I went....There is also a similar Bird Shop that works the same way on Long Island, near West Hempstead, I believe it's between West Hempstead and Long Beach, on that stretch of highway that connects the two...Very nice little family-owned shop for years and years.
 
I agree with EllenD here. Ana's Parrots/Lilly's Parrots sounds like an awful operation with no consideration for the birds.
I shall keep these company names in mind for future reference.

You and me both...I literally cringe every time I hear anyone mention "Ana's" or "Lily's". There are very few parrot breeders throughout central PA, from where I'm at in State College through to Harrisburg and then up to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre/Hazelton area. There just aren't any. There are a few very small, sporadic, private people who breed their birds occasionally and then hand-raise the babies, but we're talking maybe once a year or every other year, and they are typically Cockatiels, Green Cheek Conures, Love Birds, and Budgies, that's it. Actually there are a few Rosy Bourke breeders around the Harrisburg area, why I don't know, but there are 3 that I'm aware of, none of which hand-raise their babies or even handle them, so they are essentially wild babies when they are sold, but these people aren't really "breeders", they simply allow their pairs to breed once in a while...There used to be a FANTASTIC Linolated Parakeet breeder here near State College, in the Huntingdon, PA area (about 25 minutes south of State College, between State College and Altoona, sort of), this guy was just great, and his Linnies were both gorgeous and very, very tame and sweet. He also bred American and English Budgies as well...But I don't think he's breeding anymore either, his website is still up but hasn't been updated in quite a while...You just can't make a profit breeding small to medium parrots here in this area anymore, too many Petco's, PetSmarts, and Petland's (there are literally 4 Petco's, 4 PetSmart's, and 2 Petland's within an hour of Harrisburg alone)...

Bottom-line is people like "Ana and Lily" pounced when the private breeders who did things the right way in this area all stopped breeding, and turned their local "Bird Broker" business into a massive, nationwide Birdmill...

I get it, believe me. I get it. I would have asked for references, and would have called the whole thing off after reading your post. But she is desperate and airline reservations are already made. It's so sad that these wonderful birds are treated this way and disgusting they are taking advantage of so many people. Is there a list of reputable breeders anywhere? I was so lucky to find a guy locally that bred birds in his house. I was able to visit his house, see all his birds, including breeders, and take home a healthy baby. I just lucked out.
 
It happens...

I spend a lot of my time steering wannabee parrot-owners away from a certain shop/franchise here in NL. But they always manage to find some bright-eyed optimists.

(even our King fell in that trap - go figure, you would have expected his staff to be better informed, so if the bad-bird-people can fool a King, don't feel too bad! ;) Though I am sure they would have sold him a bird that would be really okay of course -- some gambles/ customers you cannot afford to lose ... )

That's awful...Giving those women who exploit birds money...Your friend can still cancel airline reservations...

There are more parrot breeders in Florida that the rest of the United States combined!!! That makes me sick. I hope that your friend does not end-up with one of their sick birds, as she has absolutely no idea where whatever bird she is getting actually came from. Could be from someone's filthy basement breeding operation with hundreds of sick birds. Literally.. That's where they get their babies from, anyone willing to sell their baby parrots to them cheap...

I bet I could find over 100 breeders of CAG's in Florida...easily.
