Hello everyone!

I recently got my baby at a pet store. I was informed by the staff that he/she is approximately 4-5 months old and is a Red-Crowned Amazon (RCA). But I haven't seen this gradient color on RCA’s head before. My question is, is my baby a hybrid? Or is he/she still young and the color will turn red as it matures? Thank you in advance for the help :).

Thank you Jim.

What I was referring to was the yellow coloring behind the red. Will those turn all red after he/she matures.

Baby Amazons can be difficult to classified their species as they commonly do not have their adult coloration until at least 1 year of age and as long as seven years. To add to this some 'families' have multiple names attached to the same Amazons. In this case: Red-Crowned Amazon, Green-Checked Amazon and Mexican Red-Headed Amazon.

This group of Amazons extents over a fairly large area of North and Central America and within that area there is some variations in their overall size and minor variations in coloration. Regarding coloration, this family has members with a limited crown of red to an extensive crown of red.

At present, you have a young Amazon that will likely have some changes in her /his coloration over the next two or more molts.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Amazons!

FYI: It is possible that s/he will loose all or some of those yellow /light green feathers as s/he molts.

Oh sorry! I see what you mean now. Yes it could still be because he/she is still a baby! Give it a few months :)
