My friends amazon swallowed something, not sure what it could have been but it's poo is black and red, there are no avian vets nearby that are open at this time, it's very possible it had internal bleeding, not sure what to do????

I'm very sorry for what your friend and her bird are going through. Can you tell us where your friend is, someone may be able to direct you to the nearest Avian Vet? Black or red droppings indicate internal bleeding, time is of the essence, your friend needs to find a vet and get there as quickly as possible.

London, is there anything that can be done at home right now?

Your friend can keep him warm and continue to offer soft food and fresh water and hope for the best. The thing is, none of us are qualified to give you advice for this one. The danger of black or red droppings is the possibility of, internal bleeding, egg binding, (are you certain the bird is male?) or the real possibility that the bird ingested something that caused internal bleeding, with bleeding there is always a chance of infection that will spread quickly, that's why any of these possibilities and some I'm probably not aware of, need veterinary attention as soon as possible. Parrots are very good at hiding physical symptoms of illness but black or red poop is a clear indication the bird needs medical attention.

London is more than large enough to have 24 hr/day Emergency Vet care facility available. Web Search address and get going!

Probably a bit late but for future reference

Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks guys, my friend took it to the vet early morning and it was definitely internal bleeding and he had swallowed something. Maybe it could help someone in the future but he gave it a lot of lettuce in the night, which could have made it last.

Thank you for the update. PLease let the board know how your friends Amazon makes out.

Yes, thanks for the update! I'm glad to hear the Amazon is getting the medical care he needs, I hope he recovers quickly and completely.

Hope this bird is getting better. I'm curious--did your friend have a natural Christmas tree? My aunt had an Amazon back in the 1960's who ate a pine needle from a Christmas tree which caused internal bleeding. It is that time of year . . .

No it wasn't a Christmas tree, he thinks that it was some sort of metal toy, that he swallowed while playing with it, also it's been given antibiotics and is getting a lot better :), no one will know what it managed to swallow tho.

X-Ray? To my understanding a solid block, whether plastic, ball of string, or metal will easily show on an x-ray. Have him set-up an appointment with an 'Avian' Vet, (see above Post) and get this Amazon in for an x-ray. This will save him from yet another mad mid-night rush emergency visit! Please!
