Well, as I stated in my previous post regarding the feather boa's, we were going to the vet today. I actually took 3 of our pets, Franklin our green cheek for a nail trim, DeRita for a nail trim and overall starting point check up, and our little dog Snickers to have a mysterious lump checked out.

In the car, my birds were soo awesome! DeRita, as I figured...LOVES going bye-bye...she sang and whistled and talked and napped. Franklin bless his heart, I would call his name and he'd give his click sound or beep sound that he does to let me know he was "Okay!"

And of course, Snickers...well, head out the window lovin' every minute of it!

Sooo we get to the vet, DeRita was soo social! She was all...HI!! Hello! Dooorrriiiiiiita! Wolf Whistling...and carrying on.

Vet decides to start with Franklin's nail trim, he opens the carrier door, has a towel ready and I said, "He'll PROBABLY just come out on his own first. Franklin totally jumps right out onto vet's hand totally showing off! Hahaha

This vet is AWESOME! He plays with Franklin a few minutes before getting down to business. Franklin get's all done, no harm, no foul...then we move to DeRita...I said, I've only had her 11 days...but I'm guessing she'll come out of the carrier without issue...so he opens the door and sure enough, DeRita steps right up onto his hand, he has her step ladder a few times from hand to hand, and talks to her...she walks up his arm like they've been palz for ever!

He does her exam and gives her a raving clean bill of health. Said her skin looks great and although she may never get full plumage as an unplucked bird would, he thought there was a good chance she could get most of her feathers back. She get's her nails done like a champ...he was so impressed with her because as he was doing her nails, she was totally quiet.

He said..."I can't believe how quiet she is! What a good girl!"

We talked a bit about her plucking and that we both agree it's emotional/behavorial induced and discussed different treatment options down the road if she get's worse or starts self mutilating.

DeRita get's done, no harm, no foul and on to Snickers...her lump is on her stomach and best to exam it was with her laying on her back...she's a little boston terrier/beagle mix. So I flip her over to "play baby" and she just melts...again the very impressed vet is like..My goodness! She is SOO GOOD!

Of course, I don't have to tell you that I'm beaming. It's no different than someone praising my wonderful children.

Snickers unfortunately is going to have to have surgery in a couple weeks.

Snickers gets all done just has happy as always.

Then we load back up in the car for the long drive home. Everyone was soo good! DeRita even took a nap...completely content in the car.

Once home, she enjoyed a great salad on her playstand, and even explored a couple of the new toys I put on it last night. She didn't leave the stand tonight, even settled down for a totally content nap and a full "Belly" crop actually! LOL

As she was napping, I put a couple new things in her cage to try and by golly! I FINALLY found a real winner!!! I have horses and when I was feeding tonight, I thought...hhmmm...so I brought a handful of hay in and stuffed her new ball with it. She went right for it the moment I put her back in her cage!

Here's a couple pictures to end my long rambling bragging thread.

I'm just soo shocked, impressed and pleased that DeRita has settled in with us soo well! I NEVER expected it would start out this easy. Now HOPEFULLY...it remains easy :) I can hope...right??

Have a great one all!

Thanks for continuing to put up with me. I will mellow out...I'm just soo excited right now, everyday is like, like...oh I don't know...just soo exciting!

Oh please never mellow out! Your excitement and love for your animals is so obvious, evident and CONTAGEOUS, and I love it!!!! :D

Thank you for a wonderful update!! DeRita hit the jackpot with you!!! She could have never asked for a better place. :)

I'm sorry to hear that Snickers will need surgery. What kind of little lump does your vet suspect it is?

...and you can keep the pictures coming! DeRita looks like she's smiling right here:

I am so very happy for your family.

Warm wishes and prays for the upcoming surgery.

JerseyWendy Thank you! When a dream comes true like this, it's hard not to be over excited! A few weeks ago I felt a lump right by Snickers lowest boobie. It has been rapidly changing in size and shape.

Vet wasn't exactly sure what it was by feeling it, some sort of mammory mass. He said that because we found it soo early and it's still soo small, he recommended removing it.

Then we will send it off to the lab and find out exactly what it was. We COULD do a needle biopsy to start, however he said they are not always conclusive and the recommendation would still be removal.

Rather than spend the money for the biopsy and wait, we'd rather just get it out now and hope for the best. :)

For a quick DeRita update: I think I've got this girl all figured out! LOLOL!! I found out that she loves my live plants in the house because every time I have her out, she goes straight for them, so I thought..well...by golly, why not incorporate live plants on her play stand and in her cage. She LOVES lettuce especially so I dug up some lettuce and chard and kale from my garden and put it in a pot for her, dirt and all. I put the entire pot on the floor of her cage.

Her "preening ball" of hay I stuffed is higher at her favorite perch and in the middle of her cage I stuffed some grass I picked from the horse pasture into a dish positioned about the middle level of her cage.

Next day, I went to work and ended up having to stay late. I couldn't wait to get home and see if she had explored any of the new decor in her cage.

Well, when I walked in I had a VERY HAPPY bird! She had been ALL OVER her cage and had DEFINITELY checked out everything! Her "preening ball" I made was 1/2 empty, she had pulled 1/2 the picked grass out of the bowl and definitely had some fun with the live potted lettuce/chard/kale and dirt.

Sooo...if live plants is what makes DeRita happy, live plants is what DeRita is going to get. I printed a list of parrot safe house plants and herbs and figure I'll change out plants as new ones get ready for her cage and hopefully frequently changing the plants out will keep her interested in them.

Well I better go before I start rambling again.

Sailboat Thank you! And I agree...Amazons DO RULE! :D

Have a great weekend everyone!

Toni & DeRita
