I Sun Conure who hatched March 23. 2004. I adopted her on May 8, 2005
I had a Quaker Parrot named Nikki who lived for 19 years
I grew up with Budgerigars named Screech, Zoar and Blue Baby
now momd you both my bird's can step up on to my hand but when I need a quick step up to transport or if they are on top id the cage I always use my hand held T perch. Kate often much quicker we they readily step onto it.

It seems that most parrot owners only use their hands.

We actually do have quite a few members whose birds are afraid of hands, or otherwise won't step up to them, and use a perch of some sort all the time. Not a thing wrong with that as it's generally less stressful for those birds. (And occasionally saves ER visits for the owners!)

Are there any members emo the use both the though?

I'm quite sure there are. It really just comes down to comfort level- of the bird and the human. Whatever works best for both, and there's no right or wrong.

I use both! Kirby does both, Sammy does neither but we are working on it! I will just have to figure out what to use for treats. I use dowels or a t-stand if Kirby seems upset or doesn’t put his foot up when I ask for a step up. With Sammy I exclusively use dowels for now and I have to give her a little speech about what we are doing before she’ll stand on one.

I also use both. Sometimes Talli wants my hand to pick him up, and other times he wants me to use a perch for him to step up.

Luna only steps up onto my tablet (iPad)
Merlin Hand 90% of the time.sometimes a wooden dowel.
Bingo, hand (unless he has murder in his eyes) then I use a special perch.
Bella, hand or arm, sometimes shoulder.
Baby, finger.
Merlin, finger.
Angel, finger (reluctantly).
Popeye, you sort of have to grab him.
Cheeky, wooden spoon handle.

I keep stick perches around throughout the house! Two reasons.
First, my JoJo is a GCC! His nature? Oh, I love you! Here’s a love bite to prove it!, Oh, I’m scared, here’s a bite to prove it! An so on!
Second, if for any reason, someone else has to handle JoJo, he is 100% comfortable with any perches!

Thank you all for the replies. I just realized my typo in the subject line LOL!

My girls use the buddy perch from 4z Bird Products. I find it very helpful for two situations

1. Getting birds out of the cage - 123
2. Getting birds off of my shoulder - 123.

I don't know if it is my confidence level or my vision (visual accutity is 20/300 with correction, very very nearsighted). I just feel more comfortable with my handheld perch in stations where the bird is further away.

P.S. the hand guard on the perch is great for catching birdie droppings!
