Hi all! I am new to the forum!

Live in Hawaii/Oahu, moving to Florida, SW soon.

Have a couple Macaws, they are breeding but eggs do not seem to be doing anything after 30 days. These guys are well fed, live in an outside cage (it is Hawaii) and seem to be generally ok. They were a bit distressed when we got them, the female likes to pull her feathers out. The male is a gold, female is a mix scarlet.

Not sure if they should be aloud to breed at all?

I want to separate them but they act crazy when separate.

The gold is beautiful, but they are very nippy (obviously because they are nesting).

I periodically let them out of the cage when they don't have eggs, and they crawl around the yard and forage. I can pick them up with a large stick, I ask them to step up and they do, but I am afraid they will bite the hell out of me if I dare get to close. They show a lot of aggression right now. Is it best to put them in adjacent cages at first to get them used to being separate?

Please advise thank you!

Aloha, welcome to the forum. :)

Do you know how old your macaws are? Do you also know with 100% certainty that they are male and female?

My next question would be if you want to breed them or if you'd prefer to have them as "pets". Depending on how long these 2 have been together, it may be difficult to separate them.

I am going to get them sex'd. They are about 6-7 years old. Trying to get them to breed, but want whats best for them. So I would separate them if I can, but having tried that before like I mentioned they went a little nuts, calling to each other and it broke me. Is there an easy way to separate? Or just cold turkey?

They are just the age when domestic raised macaws become sexually mature. As young birds they may not be sitting on the eggs long enough or you may have a same sexed pair.

When having them sexed you may want to have them surgically scoped. The vet can then say if male or female, they can also make sure the reproductive parts look healthy and mature.
