Hey every birdie! It's been a looooong time since I've been on and posted, but I need a hand to figure something out.*

I recently got a tattoo, and now that it's healing, it's super itchy. I contacted the artist to see what*to use, and he recommended a product called hustle butter. It's all natural, but I want to make absolutely sure that the ingredient's smell won't be an issue.

BTW, one of my budgies*has a respiratory issue right now. Here's the ingredients:

Made from the finest ingredients: Shea, Mango and Aloe Butters, Coconut, Sunflower and Rice Bran Oils, Rosemary Oleoresin, Green Tea, Vitamin E Complex & Mint Arvenis Essential Oil. With Essence of Papaya and Coconut.

Mentha avernis (peppermint) has a (natural) very high menthol content, so that may account for the irritation of the budgies airways (its the part that provides the cooling effect for the skin).

Ventilate well ;)

(the rosemary is just there to prolong the shelflive of the product)

I haven't bought this cream yet, I was asking beforehand so I don't mess with his breathing anymore. His respiratory issue is, to my knowledge, unrelated.

Always great to plan ahead :)

Menthol is in a lot of home-remedies (for humans) to clear up congestion, no idea what it would do to a budgie...

I used a sore-muscle-cream that also contained it and was not as vigilant as you are, but I kept away from the birds as much as possible and they did not show any discomfort at all.

Plze take care of the fresh tat asap...the healing-part is almost as (*if not even more) important than the actual process of pushing the ink in your skin.
Don't wait too long with taking proper care of it.

Thanks Christa! I have been using Aveeno and it worked really well for my last tat, but that was black and this one is full color. And far more itchy, lol. It works, but only for a short bit.

Have you just tried regular 100% Cocoa Butter? That's what I've used on all of my Tats and it works great, it's cheap, and there is no issue at all with your birds. I'd be weary of using anything with any kind of menthol or phenol in it, because not only can it irritate your bird's airways and nasal passages, but also their eyes and any mucous membranes. If your birds happen to get any of that, even a tiny little bit of it on their tongues or in their eyes (which can obviously transer from their feet/toenails), it will burn and irritate them horribly and for a long period of time, and there's not much you can do about it to help them (water just makes the burning worse)...

I'd stick to lotions that are 100% unscented and contain no menthol or pheno, not only for the safety of your birds, but also for your Tat, as menthol/phenol is also going to burn you like a mother too...You don't want to use anything that has an antibiotic in it, like Neosporin or anything similar on a Tattoo, but just plain old Cocoa Butter, or rather Cocoa Butter Lotion works great on them and is 100% safe for everyone and won't burn. I buy a Cocoa Butter lotion that comes in a huge pump-bottle that is cheap and it lasts forever, and it's totally unscented and has nothing else in it but the Cocoa Butter and some other things to make it into a lotion rather than a harder, stickier butter...It's awesome on for sunburns too, or to just use while you're tanning, and is great on any dry skin.

Omg thank you! I actually haven't tried that. I will have to get some then. My husband JUST picked up another tube of Aveeno today, lol. So he'll be thrilled to have to get something else, lmao. Thank you so much for the info on the antibiotic ointment too, I never would've thought to not use that.

No problem...Yeah, you NEVER want to put any kind of antibiotic or medicated ointment or cream on a new Tat, nothing that you would ever put on a cut or open wound to help it heal, because what will happen is that it will speed the healing of the Tattoo, which usually ends in parts of it actually being ruined. I've seen friends do that numerous times even though the Artist told them not to do it, they just wouldn't listen, and they'd be like "See, it's healing up really quick!", and then by day 2 or 3 half of the ink was gone from their skin. Basically it does what it's supposed to do, it causes the entire Tat to scab-over really very quickly, and the ink just gets sucked right out and flakes away inside of the scab.

There are other types of medications and chemicals that will do the same thing, so you want to always watch what you put on your new Tats...Usually you'll see the Artists put a special clear ointment on them that is specially made for fresh Tats, they'll rub that all over it when they're done and then put plastic-wrap or gauze over it and send you on your way...And that special, expensive Tattoo ointment that they use is basically nothing but regular old Petroleum-Jelly/Vaseline...So that works too, but it's so greasy and it gets all over your clothes and stains it, so I usually just stick to the plain Cocoa Butter lotion. It's awesome, and it also smells really good too...I learned that trick from a friend of mine who has been doing Tattoos as his profession since we were in college, and that's what I've used on all of my Tats ever since...

Can I just say I love these off-topic-topics so much!
I learn a lot!

there is a thread here with tats I think... after healing will you share the result with us?
(If you perfer not to that is fine of course)

Of course! It's really peeling and pretty scabbed right now, so kind of gross. So I'll definitely post a picture of it after it's fully healed!
