Hi i got an 8 month YNA all he eats is his pellets! He is very scared of grapes and new food. I try to hand feed it to sam all he dose is growle at it and backs up. how can I introduce him to new food like vigges and fruits he is scared of them and leaving them in his food bowl dose not work.. halp?

Most of the time it is all he eats are seeds. Introducing new foods can be tricky. We must teach our birds that the food is meant to eat and safe to eat be setting examples. Have your bird eat with you from a plate and let him see you eat and enjoy with enthusiasm. It is the same thing for new toys.

yea he dose that with new toys and perches when i gave him his seconf perch in the middle of the night he started to screem and flap he gor frightned by the pearch till I put mu hands on it and offerd him a treat but he has been ingornig the grapes i gave him

A great way to get them to eat foods is you eat them yourself and make it seem like the most delicious thing you have ever eaten. Continue to do this and eventually their curiosity will take over and they will want to have some too! Be persistant :)

I don't know how early you rise, but try this. I assume you give him fresh pellets in the AM, well before he feeds in the AM remove his pellet dish and replace with mix of vegs/fruits maybe some cheese, yogurt etc. ,just a little of several different things. After an hour or so replace with his pellet dish. I'd use the same dish for fresh stuff as i use for pellets, in the same location.Try this for a couple of mornings and see how it works.I'm not suggesting you starve your bird , just give him a chance to try something new without the pellets present. This is my regular routine with my amazons and i've never had the problems you describe. Good Luck, Let us know how it works out. PS i think the biggest problems is the age of your bird, he's never been exposed to anything other than pellets, I 'll bet that once he trys something different /fresh he'll quickly get out of this rut, Larger parrots prefer a routine that they're safe with and it take an effort to make a change.

Another suggestion is try to warm up the fresh foods. Something like mixed frozen veggies (but watch the sodium content) Something about a warm breakfast that makes us all happy

How long has he been with you? If it has been a short time some of it could be adjustment to his new world.. Keeping in mind in the wild parrots are prey and they are very wary of new things. They usually fear new things. Not sure if this is an issue with Amazons or not. I know my guys don't like new things at first and sometimes need to see a new toy or perch from a distance and over a few days time it can be moved closer to their cage so they don't see the toy as something to fear..
