AIR FRYER safety

Hey All.

I hope you are all enjoying the holiday season with your birds. I know mine are helping to alleviate some of the stress that comes at this time of year. :)

Can anyone tell me if this product is safe to use around birds (of course I know I can't have them around it because it's hot) due to the fact that it's an air-fryer and has some kind of non-stick coating to it. If this model isn't safe can anyone tell me of one that is? My husband really wants one of these.

Wow, yet another way to repackage the famous "toaster oven!" Looks like a great way to fill that endless counter space you likely do not have!

Save you money-up and buy a Convection /Microwave Oven!!! Far more uses 'and' larger cooking area! Plus no concerns regarding those 'special' coated surfaces!

Or, you can really push for a new Stove /Oven with Convection built-in to the Over and really maximize your cooking area!

Thank you all for your replies. I did think that it wasn't safe but wanted to be sure. We don't want to heat the oven to cook for just the two of us. The other night we made 2 crab cakes and had to heat the oven just for that. We make pizza for 1 very often. Now that the kids have grown the meals became much smaller. :) We do have a convection cooker in our regular oven.

How about toaster ovens are they safe?

I wanted to get one of those, but it was non stick inside. And most of the good toaster ovens now have non stick coatings inside. I think I’ll go find a used one at the thrift shop.

There is only the three of us near all year and we use our Convection /Microwave Oven to support our varying cooking needs.

Mrs. Boats' places a high value on her counter space and the built-in Convection /Microwave Oven does not take any of that space.

We have a new Kitchen and designed it to incorporate the Convection /Microwave Oven. For your application, you will need to make your own choices. FYI: Its a 60 dollar do it all 'toaster oven' with Convection technology (likely little more than a fan was added) built to a low price point.

Sailboat do you know if the toaster I sent to you is safe or not? We also have a built in microwave (without convection) that we rarely use for anything but to reheat a coffee. Neither of us like microwaved foods.

I want it for stuff like making pizza, crab cakes, toast, etc... They use much less power than my regular oven so thought that it would be convenient and will take the place of the toaster that I have on the counter now. :)

The unit is an up-sized unit over their units that do not state 'Convection'. In this unit they simply add a fan and hotter bar heaters, plus provide three different rack levels. With what they provide regarding the product, there is no way for the consumer to judge whether they use a coating or not. Hence, there is not way to judge the product as to whether it is Parrot and/or Human (COPD) safe!

Assure that you heat the unit to temperature outside of the home to bake-off any assembly /rust protection prior to use in the home! Always use a fan to remove fumes from the kitchen to the great outdoors.

Enjoy!

Ugh I never even thought about airfryers as being scary as well!
Thank you for this post.

(I do not have one, but wanted to borrow one from a friend, to see if I would like one; they seem ideal for one-person-cooking anyway. I have a gas-oven that is more or less turkey-sized and is a bit overkill in most situations.)

call and ask but use abbreviations (PFOA and PTFE), as well as full names for each (polytetrafluoro____) and Teflon (brand). Make sure you also ask if any parts materials have the word fluoro in them as well.

Air fryers are a common source of fluoroplastics (which are in the Teflon family). They are all bad.

I don't know specific makes and models but someone on the forum had there parrot's die after using a power air fryer.
I would not risk it.

Are all air fryers poisonous to birds?

Usually, yes, because most-all of them (at least the ones I've ever seen) have a non-stick coating that either contains Teflon, or simply contains one or more of the toxic Fluorinated-Compounds that kill birds if they off-gas, such as PFOA, PTFE, etc.

****For any specific appliance, regardless of what it is, you need to call the manufacturer and ask them specifically if that specific appliance contains any Teflon, or if it contains any non-stick coatings that contain Fluorinated-Compounds such as PFOA's, PTFE's, etc. That's the only way to know for certain.

that would be I

after having it happen I did look into it and roughly 90% I can confirm are dangerous. The other 10% are 'inconclusive' at best so I would bear a wide berth to them. Honestly, if you want to fry something it's easier just to do it in a pan with some decent oil

I was literally just looking at that same combo toaster oven/air fryer thing. Guess not, then.

Oh Triggs, I didn't realize that was the cause...I'm so sorry...Such a freak thing that you would never think about...Honestly, when I think back to growing-up and all of the appliances, pots/pans, etc. that we used without ever having a problem, it amazes me how incredibly lucky I've been. The only up-side is that I think most manufacturers are becoming much more aware of this issue and at the very least are able to provide accurate information to consumer who ask about the safety of their products...I'm sure there have been lots of class-action suits and what not due to pet birds dying suddenly like this...

There are a few very safe "combo" units available that are awesome, as I believe Sailboat mentioned...We have one at work in the customer lounge that is amazing...It's a little over-kill for the customer lounge of a car dealership, but we're glad to have it, we use it way more than the customers do (trying to keep sales and service CSI and SSI scores up is an epic battle, lol)...

The one we have is a Convection Oven, a Toaster Oven, and you can quickly re-heat things too, just like a microwave does (but it's not a microwave)...It's all stainless-steel inside and out, and has removable metal racks inside like a regular oven...We use it to bake cookies, reheat or heat-up food, toast bagels, etc. There are a lot of really awesome combo-units that are safe, it's just a matter of calling the manufacturer and asking about each specific model.

well I can't 100% confirm it but it's the only thing I can think of. No other things I can put my finger on except a certain air-fryer from a brand who have 'Tef' in their name (I'll let you take guesses) used it loads without issue. One time I forgot to put even the tiny bit of oil in and no more bird

Yeah, that would be my bet too then...that's horrible, I'm sorry...

thanks Ellen, just goes to show though no matter how much you focus on details with things you just need to get distracted once for bad things to happen
