What age is good to introduce a sun conure(about 7 weeks or so when I go to get the bird) to the a cage and the top of the cage(where the perchs are set up)?

Mine is 6 weeks and it's in a cage now with the bottom covered. It LOVES climbing up and down the sides of the cage and will perch on the lowest perch.. SO CUTE!

I'd say a cage will be ok as long as you put something across the bottom bars like a bit of cardboard or something :)

I have a grate and when I get the bird I was going to put a layer of paper towels and some pine shaving(then move to newspaper lol), think that'll work?

I tried to put just paper towel down and it just started hiding and playing with it haha. I suppose that would work :) as long as you use bird safe shavings.

By the way, in my experience it is best to remove grate and place food and water dish on the bottom and the regular spot on the cage as well. They will learn and eventually you can put the grate back on.
