Buying a cag and seen a few in shops but a friend of mine has discouraged me buying anything older than 6 months as older cag he says wont get into the personality of new surroundings as he has been in someone else is home for a few years? is he talking tosh? ive seen two i really like one is aged 2 and other aged 8

While it is true that birds that have been owned previously may be accustomed to environments different from what you may be able to offer, the majority of companion parrots readily acclimate themselves to their new surroundings.....

When you consider that an African grey may well outlive you, worrying about the age of one that is 10 years or less in age, really has no basis.....

Starting off with a recently weaned bird does not guarantee that it will have the personality you want...and...while African greys are known for their talking, each bird is an individual and it is totally up to each bird whether it wants to talk or not, so I guess I have to totally disagree with your friend's rationale.....

I'm with Weco on this one, we adopted our amazon at the age of 35.
I couldn't of dreamed I would have such a lovely personality in a bird. I think any parrot has the natural ability to adapt to it's surroundings, It has more about the time you take in bonding and learning about it's specific personality whether it be a baby or a mature bird.

ok tnx have purchased an cag she will be 2 in october . At the moment she in her cage how long should i keep her in there before i take her out ? and she was ok with the male who i bought it off but she did scream when his hand approached her and obviously same with me

Have you held him already? If you did already then just go ahead and bring him out and start working with him from day one! I work with all my birds from day one.

Our cag is 8. Whistles and talks. Asks all the time what ya doin.... she is at the vets tomorrow. ; ( full check up. I would give youes some space. We have had Sparky a week. And have several bites to prove how unsettled she is with me handling her. The previous sh used to use a perch to get her in and out the cage. She ran up the perch to lay into me. She will however do anything for my husband.

There is no set amount of time that it takes for a bird to become comfortable with you, again, every bird is different, but patience around your bird is something you will have to learn.....if the bird was afraid of the seller's hands, it doesn't sound like he had ever hand trained his birds.....

Sitting by the bird's cage, talking to it & occasionally offering it a treat, through the bars, will help it begin to trust you, but sticking your hand in the cage as though you are trying to grab the bird will just make the time longer......

While you are waiting, it might be a good idea to read about clicker training and touch training African greys......there is a lot of information about this training oon the internet and there are several video clips about it on youtube.....

Good luck.....

just a update she has started eating out of my hand and step up on my hand once today so progress. Only thing im worried she has twice flown in my room and when she does fly its like a panic fly and hits her self on blinds or door should i have her wings clipped so she does not do damage to herself?

Did she get spooked??? I personally don't clip my birds as they will learn to maneuver flight around the house over time. Clipping is a personal decision! It's something that's been talked about over and over....

or could it be as she aint 2 until october that she dont know how to fly?

IF she was allowed to take flight during fledge time she should be able to fly. Was she clipped?

i seriously dont think she has the breeder sold her at 4 months old to the person i bought off and i dont think they taught her very much in 14 months they had her . And now i have her i can tell that she cant fly as every time she does she bangs in to anything gonna cause her self serious harm :( what can i do ?

Give her flying lessons! Use treat and ask her to fly to you on command, a lot like recall training. She will learn to grasp it soon enough.
