Age guesstimates of macaws by wrinkles?

Ok don't laugh me out of here, but I am wondering if my macaw has too many wrinkles, or not enough on his face for his age! I have been doing hours and hours of Internet research about macaws since I brought one home a couple months back. I am a total newbie.

My vet told me that it's tough to guess the age of birds, so she couldn't help me age mine. I was told by his previous person that he is 10 max but I am not totally trusting that due to the situation that the bird came from. Somewhere I read that young macaws will have some eye color indicators that you can use to judge that they are juvenile, before they mature. (The eye is all dark when they are young, but then the light ring emerges around the pupil when they are mature.). Then after they get their color ring you cannot tell just how mature the bird is. That same article suggested that a macaw's face patches will get more wrinkly as they age, like people's skin will do.... I am curious to know if any of you can attest to this wrinkling and I would love to observe this wrinkling of other birds than mine.

I do see some wrinkling on my guy's face (will have to get photos tomorrow) but I am not sure if it is age appropriate wrinkling for a 10 year old or not. I have not seen other macaws up close to compare. Do any of you have a really mature macaw (30 yrs+) that you could share some facial patch photos with me? How about those of you with the younger guys than mine? So just how fleshy and full do facial patches on young birds look? I think my guy has thin skin on his face, but that is because I don't know otherwise. I need to see some others up close to be able to compare. I have not have this opportunity yet.

My macaw and I are both learning about each other now that we are in one another's lives, but unfortunately I am not totally sure of his background. I am not even sure if he's really a boy.... I do try to keep in mind that he may be a very old bird and he won't be with me for as long as I think. I know that I could wake up to an egg on the cage floor too...but regardless he's here now and we keep rolling along....

Anyway, if we can talk about wrinkles and age in macaws I will be all ears! Thanks in advance.

Hi, I've never heard of face wrinkles. My Macaws are 11 and 7 (almost 8) and neither one of them have any wrinkles. I met a gentleman a couple of weeks ago with his Blue & Gold Macaw, the bird was 42 years old. No wrinkles, if he had told me the bird was 2 years old I would've believed him. Lets see what some other owners have to say. Anyway, best of luck with your new macaw.

I would have to say that wrinkles don't play a part. You might be able to go by eyes, but even that isn't very accurate.

Here is a video of Rosie, a greenwing macaw that is over 60 years old! She's only recently started slowing down, going blind and having foot problems, but you would never guess she's as old as she is based on how vibrant appearing she is!

And a military macaw that's about 50 years old now.

Another greenwing going on the age of 88 years old, although it seems whoever wrote the article got some macaws mixed up... I actually heard about this macaw and 102 Dalmations.

And there was a greenwing macaw that played in a comedy skit that recently died, but I can't recall the name of the greenwing nor the comedy...

This bird apparently just passed away at 84 years old:

I sure couldn't tell it was an old bird based upon its facial skin condition - at least from the photo.

Wow, those are some cool macaws in those videos! Also I really appreciate the photo of Tyler Kerkovich. I see that he does have a bit more crinkles on his face than my guy.... But mine is crinkly too. I got scared to think that mine could be that old!

I note that Tyler has really white eyes, but that could just be the photo though. Do parrots eyes get lighter and lighter in time, or is that light eye a red macaw thing? My guy has more golden tone to his eyes.... I'm just asking questions as they come to me, so forgive me if I ask something too odd.

Thanks again for those clips and the close up of Tyler. And Good grief, I just noticed the close up of the B/G in the banner at the top of this forum page! He really looks crinkly and wrinkly in the white patch of the face. Much more so than mine. I will have to find that site that made me ask this whole question in the first place and Ill share it here.....

I hope they don't get more wrinkley as they get older - my baby is only 6 months old and check out those wrinkles! His eyes are darker than they look in this picture, although I've noticed them starting to lighten slightly already.

Thank you for such a great close up of your youngster! How adorable. I wish I could touch my guy. So far the times I can give him a head scratch are few and far between..... Maybe one day....

Although there is some debate about this bird actually being Winston Churchill's bird, he is undoubtedly very old. Click the link below to take you to a YouTube video of a B&G that is presumed to be 107 years old and you can see his face patches very well to make your own conclusions.

If you want to know your bird's sex, just Google Avian Biotech in Tallahassee Florida. They can do it with a plucked chest feather and when I had it done years ago it was $17. It likely has gone up since then.

OK, I have no idea if macaws get more wrinkly as the age. I just thought since most of the birds submitted here are of mature & very mature macaws, you might like to see how much wrinkle is on young not mature yet birds~My boys & my baby Green Wing girl.
