Hello, I have an Indian ring-neck I bought that wasn't hand fed, and I am going to sell him so I can get an African grey. My question is I know Indian ring-necks are known to be temperamental even when hand fed and was wondering if African Greys are the same way? The African grey will defiantly be hand fed though. Any suggestions or things I need to know? I appreciate any help anybody can give me.

Birds in general are temperamental. They are not like domesticated animals. For example, a dog is predictable. You know what to expect from a dog given it's general temperament. This tends not to be the case with most birds no matter what the species. Even the sweetest birds can suddenly start biting and acting out for reasons that are not always known to us. They could be hormonal, protective of the person that they see as their "mate", just in a bad mood and many other reasons that can not predicted. We love them anyway. ;) African greys have the same propensity to have these issues. In general, they are wonderful birds who typically love to interact with their humans.

I agree birds vary with their personalities. My daughter and I purchased our CAG'S (1male 1female) from the same store within 2weeks of each other. They are approximately the same age (within a few weeks). My Rocky is as sweet as they come, her Rue is smart as can be but not as sweet. Very different personalities but both awesome.

The reason I ask was I had heard IRNs are worse than others about that, that info could be wrong. I keep snakes as well so I understand how sometimes they act different. As a whole, are they relatively easy to keep and get accustomed to you?

I've only had my rocky for about 6 months, but so far out of all my birds (B&G macaw and 2 sun conures) he's the easiest.

Ok, thanks. I'll gladly pay the price tag for one, I just didn't want to and then realize they had some kind of species trait that bugged me. I defiantly want to try to teach it some cool tricks and to talk lol

The only difference between mine and my neighbors timna seems to be size and a little difference in coloring. That's about it. I'm not sure if there are any other differences but that's all I've witnessed.

Oh and hers is really mean! But that could be part of that birds personality and not the rule of course.

The reason I ask is because our local breeder said the timneys were more tame than the congos, what really is the color difference? And which would you suggest?

I guess I would go visit the birds and see which one picked me. That's the one I would bring home. Sounds silly but you can tell when YOU are chosen. Here's some picks of the two types: this is a CAG

I would like to get a Congo, but the breeder here only has a couple of timneys. Where would be a good place to look where breeders are?

I found a breeder locally, hopefully he'll have some end of march :)
