Our neighbours in our complex and Afrikaans speaking. Another language here in South Africa.
They have a 2 year old boy named Pieter. He is always walking around with a dummy in his mouth 24/7.
He hardly speaks, just the basic words Pa, ma, and hello. He parents are extremely concerned about this.
Weather permitting (summer here now) I placed Mishka on the balcony, in her smaller cage. She first has a bath, then a few treats in her cage
THEN the chatterbox begins.
I often hear Pieter on the balcony mumbling baby things.
Today his mom called me into their apartment, and said there is something I must see and hear.
I was absolutely shocked and bewildered.......
Pieter was talking to Mishka, repeating so many words she was saying.
He was saying birdie birdie - I love you mommy - doggies are barking - hello - bye bye - the clock is ticking - pick up the ball - call the police.
The mother started crying, it was overwhelming, so we cried together.
I went by there later during the afternoon, and low and behold, he was still saying a few of the words. He said to his mom I love you mommy, while I was there.
What is amazing is that it is not his home language. He now knows more words in another language now.
Now we know we can learn from our birds .......
