- I have owned a Hahns macaw and also a sulphur crested cockatoo.
I'm new to this site so I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum to post in.
But I've recently went out of town to a pet store that was selling birds because I was looking to purchase one as the adoption centers are very far from me. And seeing the birds I've noticed that all of the larger size birds have cracks in their beak, have bald spots, and are itching like crazy while being very aggressive and plucking. I've asked a few people with a little more knowledge than me on the subject about health standard checks and such and I was told they might not have been checked on to assure they are running their pet store by all the standards. (And by standards I mean being checked to see if the pets are being neglected and such). I've seen and read many articles where pet stores were shut down and birds were given to adoption centers due to the same type of stuff. I was wondering if there was a certain place I should call or report to to assure those birds are being taken care of or if I should just mind my own business. I just hate seeing those birds that way. Some were trying to break out of their cage. Very dusty and dirty. While all the other animals ferrets, rabbits, etc seem taken care of the birds seem to only be fed and watered. The birds talk and reach out for you but they also pluck their feathers right in front of you. Another pet store told me they are for certain that those birds are not being cared for as there are multiple in such a small room. Opinions? Please no rude comments as I'm not very sure on how pet stores are ran and the needed standards. I just really hate seeing the birds in such horrible condition. I understand pet stores may be difficult to run but it seems to me that these birds aren't getting what they need to be healthy and happy. All feedback is appreciated.
