Advice needed.

Hi guys, need some advice for my broken/fractured leg macaw.

2 weeks ago, my macaw injured his leg. At first, i thought it was just a small sprained leg due to the facts that, there's no trauma/open wounds on the leg itself. So I bought him to one of my friend that has more experience on parrots keeping. She suspected that he could have broken or fractured his leg and advised me to bring him to the avian vet so that they can put a splint/cast on him. So I did as what she advised.

Upon inspection by the avian vet, he told me that my macaw most likely had broken or fractured his leg. But he will not be putting cast/splint on him as his leg is still in alignment and the bones that broke or fractured is near to each other. So chances are, the bones will heal nicely themself without any supports from the cast/splint.

So far, his eating and drinking well too. His stretching and moving the affected leg's thigh area (Which is some improvment that i've seen) but not willing to perch with that leg and i don't really see him moving the affected feet (Just the thigh area).

Any advice? Is my macaw doing well? As told by the avian vet, it will probably take weeks to months for his leg to recover but i'm worry because his not really moving the feet. Please help and thank you.

Hi, well the first thing I would look at is colour, is the foot the usual colour? Does it match the other? Any swelling?

Does it feel the same temperature as the other foot?

Any doubts should be taken to your Avian Vet. How do you feel about a second opinion if you have another AV within reach?

It may be worthwhile looking at some different perches to help him through this period.

Yes, the foot color is still the same as the other unaffected foot.

For temperature, I'm not really very sure about it.

The problem is, the AV that I visited is the most recommended and experienced vet for avian. Not much Avian vet here in my country.

Do you know how the bird injured himself? I'm just curious as to whether or not you could/should make any changes in cage/environment/etc.

Sorry about your Macaw' s broken leg. I'm sure he'll get over it soon! Personally, if it's nothing too serious, I wouldn't worry much. I suggest keeping an eye on him, and if you get suspicious about how his leg is healing, go to the vet again.

Yeah, hoping that he will recovers soon. He's still very active. Will monitor him for the time being.

Updates: Tried putting my fingers near his injured foot, it seems like he is trying to grip on them but he couldn't grip on them tightly. So I suppose that it's a improvement? And also, I have seen him tucked in his injured foot slightly slanted sometimes but not always. Is there anything I should be worried about?

Fortunately I have no experience with fractures on my birds, so I am not much help there. If I were in your situation, I would call the vet and ask him/her your questions. None of us have seen your birds injury nor are we vets. I would personally gladly pay for an additional vet visit to put my mind at ease.

It does however sound like the leg is improving The only experience I have with fractures are my own and when I have broken arms or legs, the muscles are painful to use in the affected area, so even with splints, the fingers are painful to use and you therefore use them less than usual

Will give my Avian vet a call later on. Although my avian vet has already told me that most likely everything is gonna be fine, I'm still worried that due to my negligence. His leg might be crippled. Guess I'm really too paranoid.
