Hi all,

New here but not too birds and looking for some advice. Past experience os breeding Aus parrots as a tenager though now can't (for the moment). Until recently we had a Green CC. Unfortunately he flew away and so am looking for a new pet.

We have a decent size cage and am looking for something a bit bigger bird. Quakers, Alexandrine, IRN or the Moustache look good. Would love an Eccy but dont think now is the time. The cage is also just outside on the deck as there is definitely no room inside for it.

From my research and prior knowledge it apperas the Moustache is the best fit for us. Not as noisy as others, more independent and less cuddly (we can play with it and take it out so dont worry, it wont be lonely), generally a good talker. A pet shop nearby has a H/R male approx 6 months old. They have had him for a couple of months thouh he came to me quite easily and seemed a bit shy.

So........
Should i worry about how long he has been there?
Are they good pets for a family?
Buy from a pet shop or wait a few months for a breeder?
Other tips?

Thanks

im sorry for the your loss of your bird, but im happy for you that your getting another :). how long hes been there- if hes sweet and comes to you, and seems healthy, go for it.
family pets- that depends how you socialize him, get him used to everyone, he will pick a favorite. some birds are one person birds, but socialization can minimize this.
feed him good quality pellets, fruit, veggies, and some seed. no avocado, chocolate, or alcohol.
tips- i dont think you should keep him outside, if he gets out of his cage, he will escape. even if hes clipped he can still fly outside, so to take him out of the cage, you have to take him outside, then take him into the house, this isn't safe. wild animals also pose a threat to him, he will be scared, and could be harmed or catch a disease from a wild animal. also inside you will need space for play stands. i dont think you should keep him in a cage outside. good luck!

Im sorry about your bird. How big is your cage(what are the dimensions), that will also determine what bird you can get.

Also, with the cage being outside, what kind do climate do you have? I appologize if you may have mentioned where you're from elsewhere and I missed it.

Climate in winter would be mild, never freezing and he will be covered. Summer can get hot but its a very cool area.

Cage is 45cm wide, 65cm long and about 80cm tall. Big enough for a Moustache?

No that cage would not be big enough for any of those birds, I wouldnt put anything bigger than a green cheek in it.
It is only 17"x25"x31".
