Hey hey everyone! I am going to be adopting or purchasing a lovebird as soon as possible. I am having a hard time finding one in my area though. Does anyone know of any places I can look in Calgary Alberta Canada??

Also wondering to fellow lovebird owners...What are they like? lol My only experience with lovebirds was when I was 12 years old my friend had 2 lovebirds who weren't taken care of properly and who were vicious to anyone who tried to touch them. I was fascinated with them so I tried to take them out of the cage (I wasn't very bright when I was 12) Anyway they trashed my hand lol. So I was wondering what they are generally like?

Another thing I wanted to bring up that is just more of a rant than anything is Why do parents get their kids birds because they don't want their kids to have a "messy" dog or cat? I seriously don't understand this. It happened to two of my friends one with the lovebirds and one with cockatiels. All had to be rehomed! Grrrr I just don't understand how people can assume that a bird is easier to care for then a dog or cat!!! lol theres my rant!

Oh any informative links to lovebirds would be nice as well:orange::rainbow1: Thanks to all!!!!!!:D

You can always try craigslist! (Just be wary of scams)
Love birds are fun little guys but do seem to do better in pairs. They don't really talk from my experience, but their chirping is sooo cute! 99% of the time they'll be wary at first, as will any new bird, but with love and patience they will come around and be quite cuddly. Keep in mind though that in any species, every single bird is different and will have a totally different personality!
Most people just don't understand what a bird requires, they assume it can be kept in a cage 24-7 and you can throw it food once in a while, and that the bird will be just fine. It's so sad, I wise I could run into pet stores with printed flyers for bird care and tape them all over everyone, in a friendly but informative manner XD.
Great luck finding your perfect feathery friend!! = )

Thanks, I have tried craigslist and there are no listings for birds that I can find in my area (maybe I just don't know how to operate on that site lol)

I heard they do better in pairs but I have also heard if you have enough time with them they can do great as a single bird. Someone is ALWAYS in my house and everyone loves parrots so he/she would never be alone.

I wish I could do the same in pet stores and everywhere else! It is baffling to me how some people think "oh this bird that used to fly loooooooooooooong distances in the wild can just be thrown in a cage with a bit of food and water" haha excuse my sarcasm but honestly!!!!

Beil, I'm sooo happy you're finally looking to maybe getting another bird. Sorry to bring this up, but I just miss hearing about Hiroshi, my heart is broken :( He was the happiest bird ever :) You were the best parrot owner you could possily be.

Did you try ebay classifieds? Always a good place to look for birds.

I agree with you on people buying exotic pets becuase they think they're easier to care for. To be honest, I think dogs and cats are far more easier to care for than most exotic pets. Here's a little joke, I related pets to several popular websites:
Cats-Youtube-Fun to watch and good at keeping you entertained
Parrots-Facebook-Takes a lot of time than you think, yet filled with fun stuff, and sometimes annoying (lol)
Dog-Google or Bing-Extremely reliable and not likely to abandon you
Fish-MySpace-You haven't checked it in months, how is it still alive?

Thank you parrotqueen I believe you have just changed my mind about a lovebird. I had no idea about birdline. I found the sweetest quaker for adoption named bhudda. For some reason I can't find where in Calgary they are located. I really want to stop by for a visit. Anyone know?????

Ooooh, Quakers have such the biggest personalities, I'm amazed they fit in their bodies!! We got our lil quaker Georgie from a rescue, and they didn't list where they were located either. If you e-mail or phone them I'm sure they can set you up with a meeting. = )

Yeah I have always wanted a quaker parrot. The problem for me is their parrots come with cages and I already have two cages and can't fit anymore! lol. Maybe I'll give them a call.:) I would love to help out one of those little birdies.

I may have a female quaker parrot for adoption! I just emailed the lady!!!!!!!! I hope this goes through!

Hey Beilana, my memory isnt as good as it once was, but I remember a couple of months ago we were discussing bird clubs in Calgary/Alberta and someone on the forum that lives near you suggested one in your area, anyway what I would suggest is that you visit the club and talk to the members, theres usually a few breeders among the members who also know other breeders that know other breeders and so on, I'm sure if there are any lovebird breeders in your area they'll know who they are, many clubs allow visitors to come check things out for a couple of meetings before deciding if they'd like to join, it also gives you an opportunity to network with other bird people close to home :), now since I suggested this, I don't want you to go and find bird friends there and leave your bird friends here ;)

Bobby, lol How could I ever forget about my bird friends here! I have found a quaker parrot as well as a lovebird for adoption. I am just waiting for the response from the owners.
Thank you for the suggestion. I know we have petEXPO here....I'm not sure of any others but I will definitely check it out :)

I'm going to an expo this sunday, I've been looking for a CAG to adopt, but so far nothing in my neck of the woods, who knows what will happen, went to one a couple of weeks ago and saw the sweetest little Senigal Parrot, played with him most of the time I was there, broke my heart not to bring him home

Awww Yeah it is so hard going to places like the humane society or adoption places because I just want to bring them all home with me (and I live in a condo) What a mess that would be!!!!! lol

Oh it's such a shame you aren't in the UK. I know of some for sale for £40. 2...and their cage. It makes me so sad I can't take them and so angry I could spit but I won't drone on!

I read a bit about them as a breed (just to torture myself, I'm sure) and from what I can gather....mischief.....mischeif.....mischeif! Brilliantly at opening their cages, into everything they shouldn't but so cuddly and loveable I think it must be desperately hard to stay mad lol.

Good luck!

Well I know I may seem like a total caotic mess but for me its not ALL about species but more who I fall in love with at first sight and I have found a baby lovebird who I just ADORE. This is what he looks like http://www.birdchannel.com/images/showbird-diary/0308/normal-green.jpg

Ecclipse, I was actually thinking about contacting you because I knew you had gotten a lovebird after Hugo passed. It will be the same for me with Hiroshi. I don't have much experience with lovebirds at all. What is Rosie-may's diet??? :)
