Adopting a Parrotlet

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has any experience adopting an older parrotlet. I've seen some suggestions that one adopt an older bird so that their personality is more predictable. Would you recommend it? Where did you adopt from? I can't seem to find many places with parrotlets.

If you have any bird rescues around you, Google can help, talk to them about what you're looking for. Even if they don't have any parrolets at the moment, you could ask them to contact you if one comes in. I think you wanting to adopt am older bird is wonderful. I do a lot of work with a local rescue, including foster work, and rescue birds can make amazing pets.

Talking to a rescue, they may also give you the opportunity to work with other birds, in case maybe something else catches your heart. I never thought I'd take in a sun conure, but after I met mango, I wouldn't give him up.

Parrotlets are fairly rare in rescues, but if you are patient one will come along. Right now Petfinder only lists 2 parrotlets in the entire US for adoption. But, I've seen cases where a rescue will get in several at a time from a previous home.
You can also keep an eye on Craig's List and other similar sources.
And yes, adopting an older animal is always a great idea!! No matter what species!

Glad to hear you're considering a parrotlet! Jack came to me as a 9 month old from Craigslist, and he was finger tamed in several months. I haven't had any experience with adopting older birds, but one thing to keep in mind is that they might be a little more stubborn and set in their ways, which might make it harder for them to adjust to a new life with you (but worth it in the end!)
I definitely agree that finding parrotlets on adoption sites can be difficult, my suggestion would be finding local bird rescues and letting them know you are interested in a parrotlet, so they can let you know if any appear. Good luck with your search!
