Goblin my rescued adult female Fischer x masked Lovebird
and Gremlin my baby male Sun Conure
Hey guys,

I bought my conure a week ago. We are not sure of his age but he can fly and is not weaned so he's probably is between 6-9 weeks old. He seems to crave our attention, wanting to be with us constantly (ie calls out when he's in his baby cage in a separate room, runs up our arms/flies over to sit under our necks) but he also seems like he is simultaneously annoyed at us (ie doesn't want to be scratched, sometimes bites pretty hard and screams loud). Additionally he is always head bobbing and fluffed up.

Is this all a part of his adjustment process? Is he stressed out by the handling? What are we doing wrong?

How many handfeedings is your baby sun conure on per day? You said he wasn't weaned yet. Is he eating any solids on his own?

He may be cranky because he's hungry (head bobbing means he's begging for food).

My conure is 14 weeks old and I've been learning on the job. This is what I have surmised from my short experience, what others have written and what I have found on You Tube.
Basically my bird is like a 3 year old that screams, bites and is very sloppy. I thought I had gotten a winged Tasmanian Devil. I realized that he wasn't biting hard...just kind of saying hello. The one time he got me good gave me the range of what he could do. He explores everything with his mouth and biting is part of that process. As far as the screaming goes, I didn't think it would be as bad as it can be. It usually happens if he is bored or he sees me leave the room. I've learned to swap out toys every few days, change the layout of the cage and since I work from home take him out a lot. He used to really let loose in the early morning after I took the cover off the cage and would leave the room to make coffee. So he learned what the word out means and I ask him if he wants out and he sits on my shoulder quietly while I make coffee.

I think these are incredibly intelligent creatures in an artificial environment. I'm sure they go through a whole range of "emotions" throughout the day. I think I think it just takes time to learn how to work together.

Thanks for your responses guys!! Really appreciate all the help and advice we can get :)

Gremlin gets 3 feeds a day (Roudy bush formula 3) 12ml/feed and he gets to play with pellets, fruits and veggies in between. His crop takes at least 6 hours to empty which is why the vet recommended only 3 feeds max, so I'm not sure if thats the reason for the head bob. From what we've read its just a "baby thing"

We've noticed great progress in just a couple of days. The biting has reduced significantly but the screaming has persisted. We've noticed it only happens when he can see/hear us and is not out of his cage with us. He has quite a few play things but seems to ignore them if we are within ear shot UNLESS he is outside. He calms right down when he's outside our house. This is almost the opposite effect of what we want- quiet inside, noisy outside haha...

Any suggestions about how we can switch up this behaviour?
