I recently got a new job which hopefully is going to be my entry point into my dream career. It's an opportunity I had never thought I would have and it was just down to luck that I saw the add. My friends mum was going through job vacancies and saw it and sent it to me, so I applied and to my amazement I got the job! I use a laser to engrave the company logo and diamond information onto the inside of rings, I hope it leads to an apprenticeship so that I can become a qualified jeweler. Prior to this, I was studying to become a nurse. As a bit of a congratulations, I bought myself this, it's a 1.09 carat mint green tourmaline from Nigeria that was precision cut by Lloyd Forrester. I haven't got it yet but it is on it's way to me, I am very excited to get it though! I intend to set it in a lapel pin to wear for special occasions. What do you all think?

WOW! I think that Toumaline is my birth stone and I should wear it on my finger! It's beautiful!

Beautiful! That would look really nice bezel-set in 18K yellow gold (it would set off the mint color). 1/2 or 1pt bead-set green diamonds in the bezel would set it off too;)! I'll be interested in seeing what you decide:) I studied at the GIA and got my AJP and if I ever re-took my 20 stone, I would be a GG (I failed by one identification, you have to have a 100%).

Where do you plan to study? I know Paris College in TX has a good jeweler program http://www.parisjc.edu/index.php/pjc2/main/tijt/ and so does the AGS with their registered jeweler program. (Sent you a PM on this)

Thank you guys, I'm glad that you all like it. I really hope I like it in person as well!

I have had a few suggestions for rose good actually Kiwi. Interestingly enough the vendor also suggested yellow gold as well. I'll try it against both yellow and rose anyway and see what sets off the colour best. I'm a bit worried about a bezel setting, my main concerns are that tourmaline is a fairly chippy gem and that the bezel will reduce the face up size of an already small tourmaline. As for the diamonds, I do really like that suggestion, you wouldn't happen to have any photos of anything similar would you? I find it's easy to imagine the head of a ring being the pin. There's not much out there in the way of lapel pins.
My thoughts were that I could have it prong set with a halo of 2.5 pointer diamonds. It was suggested that a fairly heavy gallery would bring out the precision cut more which I would love to emphasize.
I am very open to suggestions though, I have a very open mind.

I would love to get an apprenticeship at my current place of work. There doesn't seem to be all that many options to become a jeweller here in Australia. All of the Jewellers I know did it as an apprenticeship.

White gold/platinum/silver will wash out the mint color. Yellow or rose would make it pop.

I do love colored diamonds! Tiny ones aren't terribly expensive either. I would wait for a trade show so you can buy them and match them yourself:) I'm personally more fond of bezel-set gems than prong-set. More secure, and I think it makes the gem show better like a "frame" rather than "claws". I guess thats a personal preference though. It does take a delicate touch to roll a bezel on a soft stone though:) Theres also gallery wire (though that can be a bit on the girly side).

I don't know much about how the jewelry trade is run and regulated in AU. Apprenticeships are still common in some countries. Does your new employer offer apprenticeships?
