Zack, a Blue Fronted Amazon
Zack has a habit of hissing. It seems that he is doing through his nostrils. Is there any meaning to this?

On the plus side, he seems to have been taught the 'wolf whistle' somewhere. He did it once on his own and now he'll repeat it when I do it.

Yes, Doug, Amazons hiss AND they growl, too. No, I'm not being sarcastic here. My Sam hisses or growls each and every time he needs to go back to his cage. It's hilarious. :D

is it something he does when he's upset/mad ? That's the only time i've seen that reaction.

They make all kind of strange sound when they are frighten. Some times they sound almost like Tyranozaur:-)

I've never heard Percy hiss but he makes a (very girly, but don't tell him I said so) growl when he's fighting with his toys or can't get out of some twist he's managed to get himself into. I swear he is the only bird in creation that can manage to entangle himself in a plain round plastic ball!

I haven't had hissing with my birds. But all birds have some way of showing they are not happy, especially when it's time to go back in the cage. ;)

I'm not sure what the trigger is. I know he sometimes does it when I try to pet him but also just when I am talking to him. Possibly I am getting too close and "crowding" him. Still learning his personality traits. :)

My b&g macaw will his at me if he was sleeping and doesn't want to come out of his cage. If I have to make a run out in the evening and I come home before it's the normal bird bedtime, I will try and take my birds back out of their cages. It's winter time here so it gets dark out pretty early, 6pm or so, normal bird bedtime is 8pm. If I come home after it's dark and Nero already wants to sleep, I will get slight grumble and a super hiss.

Gotta love how different they all are!!!!!

Yep Amazons hiss, growl and grunt.
Bosley also does this when he doesn't want to go to his cage, hissing sometimes also occurs if a new object is introduced and he's not sure what to make of it.

My Senegal will make a creaking sound to let me know that she annoyed. It's like a warning, "dont do that" like if I am touching her in a way or an area she doesn't like. But there are also times she will make it when she doesn't want to do something I want her to do, like go back to her cage. So pay attention to why he is hissing.

My conures hisses a lot at anything or anyone he doesn't like. It's loud, cat-like, and ridiculous.
