Hi all, I have had my BFA for almost a month. He was purchased from a pet shop (I know I know) I tried to find a breeder for months that would ship to my remote location with no success.
I don't know if he/she is male or female but we call he/she Sherlock. He is extremely hand shy, non aggressive but skittish when you try to get near him with your hands.
I started clicker training him and he picked up target training right away, I was able to guide him in and out of his cage easily with this method. the only way to get him off his cage was with a perch and my had at the far end of said perch. I would take him to a T stand and we would work on step ups onto the perch over and over while slowly moving my hand closer so he had a little less perch to step onto. after about a week he was stepping onto my hand with no hesitation, however under no circumstances would he step onto my hand from his cage. Well long story short today he finally took the plunge and stepped onto my hand from his cage. Now he can't wait for the training sessions and eagerly steps up every time. Anyway just thought I'd share for all of you going through the same thing with trying to gain your birds trust.

Thanks for sharing this. :)

Hey Telsa , welcome to the forum. Sounds like he's what i call a fearful bird. IMO is a much easier train than a aggressive zon. It's sounds like you are doing everything right. You'll have a great companion for life. Socialize, socialize, socialize. That's the best advice i can give . Exposing him to different people/situations will lead to a much happier life for everyone. Take him everywhere and do everything with him. Good job, hope to see you around on the forum.

PS you know we're gonna bug you for picture/videos.

ChuChu was the guest at my ladies luncheon yesterday. I ordered my margarita, set up his PVC portable Tstand and took him out of the travel bag. As the women arrived he knew he was the center of attention and that suited him just fine. One gal took off her jewelry so she could hold him. Then with eight women all participating in conversations around the table, ChuChu went into Amazon overload and I had my hands full until the food arrived. He tried all the steamed veggies, but finally settled for the shrimp and calmed down. It was a long 1 1/2 hours and even though I was pleased with his behavior at this new experience, I was relieved to arrive home and he was tired too.
The restaurant was a typical open patio and there's never any objection to well behaved pets. In general the Mexican people believe in "live and let live" and this also applies to animals and pets. I think they put so much emphasis on enjoying life and if one finds pleasure in shopping, dining, walking on a beach or in a park with their pet, it's fine with them.
