Kevin the Congo African Grey (DNA'd F) and Ra the Sun Conure
My bf has a conure that fell in love with him at a pet store. This bird has been nothing but unfriendly since he settled in. I recently got my african grey, a wonderfully socialized bird and I feel finally getting to see the way a companion bird should behave has taught me a lot about this little conure.

Ra is afraid of our hands, presumably from the way the pet store grabbed him out of his cage. He WILL bite. He WILL draw blood. I took this as do not handle, leave me alone. We'll address that later.

I believe he was never taught to fly. He's barely a year old and had been there for 6 months when my bf got him. He's finally molted and has his flight feather back. Ra will fly to you when you walk in the room. I had initially taken this as a scene from Hitchcock's The Birds and flailed every time.

I turned to leave, he flew and landed on my shoulder and started preening my hair. I handed him a nut and he flew back to his cage. EPIPHANY. This poor bird has been wanting attention but since he's afraid of hands he has no idea how to show it. He'll step up for my bf, but will only fly to my shoulder. Female hands are apparently horrifying.

This revelation has changed my relationship with my little guy, I was afraid and because of one bite too many, I assumed he only had the worst intentions. Hopefully the new year will bring a lot more improvements but I feel he's made great strides since then. Heck, getting him of the sunflower seeds was enough of a challenge, Maybe next year we'll eat some fresh veg. :orange:
