5 months ringneck poor feather

hello everyone
glad to find this website that helps and share parrtots lovers experianse.

am totally new to parotts and i recently got a green male of ringnecks
he is 5 months only even the black ring hasnt shown yet and honestly a friend of mine got him for me as am a bird lover in general!

my ringneck ( riko ) eat's very well and he has so much energy but his feather is not good at all i just feel that he has a very poor feather even in the tail his feather dameged

i dont know if its because he's changing to his adult feather or what!

please help me in this and what is the best food diet for them

If you could post us some pictures (preferably one of the whole bird and some closer of the feathers that bothers you) we might be able to help out more.

As for the ring: males don't develop the ring till they're between 18 to 24 months old so Riko still have some growing up to do.

even on top of his head his feather aren't full green and nice you can see some white/yellow small feathers like a bold guy

He doesn't look so bad from the pictures!! 5 months is still young, so he has a molt to go through before he gets all his *new* adult feathers. I'm not sure about the tail feathers, but my conure's tail looks the same way, and her cage-mate likes to nibble her tail so I assume it's just a rough-play or over preening thing. (Or atleast I hope so, hah)
Maybe he just needs a good bath, then he'll clean himself up real well! Hehe.
As long as he's getting the appropriate pellets/seeds along with a variety of fresh food for nutrients (And plus they taste much better than the cardboard pellets!!) then I don't see it being a nutritional problem. Keep us updated!

What size cage does he live in? Sometimes, the larger parakeets (that includes Ringnecks and Alexandrines) damage their tails dreadfully when they live in a cage that's too small or too narrow. Could it be your birdie is catching his tail in his cage bars or on toys in his cage?

Welcome! He doesn't look too bad. They wear out their feathers, esp. The tail feathers if their cage is too small. I don't see an stress bars and as they molt they might look a bit moth eaten. Just make sure he had the right size cage for his species, bigger is always better esp. If they have long tail feathers. Also make sure he is eating fruits, veggies, grains etc. some see is okay but not a main part of their diet. He is very handsome.

He doesn't look bad to me either! Baby birds are harsh on their tail feathers. It's not unusual for them to break or damage all their tail feathers.

Welcome! Rico's tail looks a bit damaged but like others have said, he's still a baby and is probably rough on his feathers . As long as he's got a big enough cage so that the tail doesn't get caught, he should be fine.

Cage is something to think about, size? But first off some birds just play and damage the tail feather's. My Palm at one year old looked so beat up when I got him. He hangs upside down and flaps his wings, he is just a crazy man and still is. But now that he has gone threw a molt he does look so much better. I also put him in the largest cage I could get. I actually had one custom made because his wing span is so big. He is so beautiful now. Also showering him makes a huge difference as well.
