Hi everyone,
So I've had my beautiful lovebird for about 9 months now. She had gotten used to my hand and presence being in the cage so I decided it was time to bring her in the house for a 20 minute session. I clipped her wings and her time inside went well. She was a little bit shy but walked around a bit and it seemed to go quite well for her first time.
I have put her back in her cage and I'm worried that now her wings are clipped she won't be as mobile in her cage!! She was on the bottom trying to fly up. She has managed to get into her nesting box now so she might have climbed up. What to do?? :rainbow1:

Sounds like she needs a ladder. I am guessing she is outside by herself? I would look at a indoor cage if you want to hand tame her as a pet.

Yes she has been outside. The cage is 1.2 x 800m so it's quite tall! Why do you suggest an indoor cage? A smaller cage?

Could you take a photo of her cage? Then we can help you figure out a better way to we it up.

I agree, you should get a cage for inside. Outside cages are fine for a fun few hours to enjoy the weather, but few places are good for year round.

also, i would not offer her a nest box :) there is no need for one.

a cage indoors would be great. the absolute minimum for a single lovebird is 18"x18"x24" but ideally, should be larger because they are such active birds. as long as you keep the bar spacing under 5/8" :)

just saw your cage, its so big :D she must love the size, but surely that'll fit somewhere in your home? i know many members of this forum have cages this big and bigger for their birds, and two of our cages in our home are as big as this as well.

I think she would really enjoy being inside with you. That cage should fit somewhere in the home or consider a second one!

Having her inside will give her more of a feeling of "flock". She will look to you more and more and not feel like she has been abandoned when you don't have time to be outside. I am hand taming a parrotlet right now and after one of our trainings I can see her really watching me more around and doing things. I believe she is thinking about what we just did and as I am still calm and doing my normal stuff it she is understanding she has nothing to fear from me.

Seeing the picture with the Banana Plant (I believe?), what country are you from that she can be out all day/night? Just curious.......depending where it is, the lovebird might need the box for protection (wind, cold, rain etc.).

I agree, she shouldn't have a nest box. It only promotes hormonal behavior and aggression. If she has the nest box to protect her at night bring her indoors.

I think a ladder would help your bird a lot, especially since the cage is so tall. And more perches of various textures would be good.

Well, of course a clipped bird would have a hard time in a flight cage! Yes, you need ladders AND perches lower to the ground. And I also agree that she needs to come inside and the nest taken away. Outdoor aviaries are wonderful but they require more than one single bird been out there (it's to lonely and stressing for a single bird) as well as somebody who knows a lot about diseases, parasites and treatments because they are exposed to all kind of pathogens and parasites out in the open.

Hi everyone, thanks so much for the advice! I'm in South Australia and the box is for protection from the weather and she likes to sleep in it. I'm definitely going to get a cage for inside as the current one won't fit through the door :(

How many times a day should I bring her out for "taming" and for how long. I must say I'm quite impressed when she was out for her first time yesterday she didn't bite once :) will post a pic of her out of her cage...

oh she is just so super adorable :D

can you have her inside for a little while, just until you can maybe take the cage apart and bring it in that way?

I could but I'm thinking I will get a new cage for inside and I will keep that one outside for nice days. It's spring here so the weather is glorious ATM :) she came out of her cage for half hour this morning would it be too much to bring her out again tonight?
