32inch vs 40inch cage

Howdy! I am about to buy a cage for my new eclectus I will be picking up in December. Im having trouble deciding between two cages, 40"x30"x59" and 36"x28"x56. $400 for the large cage and $300 for the smaller one. I know the general rule is "Bigger is better" but is the few extra inches really worth the extra 100 bucks? Or is the money better spent on some extra toys?

The space of the larger one actually seems significatly more to me as in if you caluculate the area of the cage it is 1,200 versus 1,008 I don't know anything about eclectus ( besides that they are beautiful birds) so I don't know if this is an issue or not. I think it is totally up to you besides the size difference what are some other differences in the cages maybe you could post the links or pictures? Anyways I think it is your personal opinion.

Hi! Thank you for your reply! They say width is important for Eclectus, which would make the $400 cage a better way to go. The issue is that the cage is going to be a gift for xmass and I'm trying not to ask for a $400 gift though I do really like the cage.

My Eclectus that I am purchasing is 10 years old and is in a house with 40 other birds. The woman I spoke to has three or four Eclectus and said this one is fully feathered, doesn't have any problems with women/children, and would "go to anyone". I think he may have a screaming problem, but in a house with 40 other birds where he has to compete for attention I think that’s to be expected. I hope once he gets some 1 on 1 time he'll quiet down.

The woman is selling the Eclectus for $500, which is a great deal considering they go 800-1000 for babies. Initially I was a bit worried that she may not be being honest, but after telling her I may not be able to make it to her area to pick up for a month or two she told me not to worry and that the bird is mine whenever I can make it.

Hopefully he'll be home sometime early December and I'll post some picks.

HI how are ya? I would say bigger is better especially for eclectus as they are very active. Also remember parrots arent hellicopters they fly horizontal not vertical. So width is of more advantage than hight.Now you mentioned that you hoped your new eclectus would be quieter in its new soroundings. They are very noisy parrots when they want to be.and you really cant change that.But there is a difference between normal vocalization and incesent screaming so keep us posted ok. Good luck.

Hi there, I would definately go bigger.

I can understand you not wanting to ask for a $400 xmas pressie, but if you go for the smaller cage, when you get your little guy home, put some toys in there with him, you may realise that the bigger would have been better, then you end up spending more $$$$$$$ on a bigger cage, As Bill said they are very active and would make use of the extra space.

I'm pretty sure that with 40 birds around even our quietest of birds would start to be loud, Please let us know how you get on with your new guy and please post some pics when you get him home.

When about in December are you due to pick him up? Not too long to go now. I can feel the excitement from here, so know how you must be getting.

Hey, and welcome, have'nt greeted yet!!:32: Thanx Peta, i'd love to help where i can. Yes, my boy Kodie drives me nuts, cant sit still they really like traveling in their cage! Then again he is a juvenile only 5 months old now! But generally ekkies are'nt noisy, they are known to be the most quiet parrots around! So a screaming problem, well id like to hear that cause i never before heard one actually screaming!!!

If you have any problems with your boy let me know ill get info from websites and breeders to help you out! Good luck and remember those pics, what subspecies are you getting, i can find out more info on personality about the different subspecies!

Not sure how inches work, only work in cm this side! But bigger is definitely better, remember he is going to stay in that cage his whole 30-40 years onwards. And you only buy once so make sure its a good quality and sturdy cage, and sandblasted (correct me if im wrong) not paint, there are many dangerous toxins in the paint that can harm your Fid! Keep me updated, im a great ekkie fan!
