3 Fingers Later

We've only have our little Faygo for a couple of days, but every time we go to get him he takes a chunk out of our fingers, making us bleed every time as well. I was just wondering if this was normal for the first little while. I'd rather not take him back but we do not want a bird that will bite THAT hard, i know they will bite, but biting that hard all the time is not something we don't want to deal with. He's a Sun Conure btw. We were told not to try to get him, to let him come out to us, but he goes to attack as soon as we even put our hands close to his cage. He loves to be talked to and loves talking back. He has no issue with us being near his cage, just our hands.

Do we just need to give him more time? (I assume this is the issue) I'm also thinking that because the pet store lady clipped his one nail too close (he bled) that he may also be extra stressed! He will at times stand on the one foot that wasn't cut too close. Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

I would not try to pick him up just yet. everything is new to him the sights ,sounds, new cage, new toys, new people. Give him some time to get to know you , sit by his cage and talk to him, try feeding him little treats thur the cage bars, such as millet spray, then open the door and let him come out on his own. Don't grab him or chase him around in his cage. He needs time and patience, and he need to learn to trust you.

Our new quaker is like that. I think she wasn't treated well by whoever dumped her, but it's also a species trait.

We're getting her used to stepping up to a hand-held perch from inside her cage, and from that she steps onto hands without biting. I think she's starting to make the connection between stepping up and getting scritches and praise.

i agree that he needs to get to know us better (he's actually getting better) but we still cannot get him out. I'm only worried be he has some poop built up on the bottom bars of the cage (some poop doesn't make it to the bottom paper lol) and we can't get in there to clean it or get him out to clean it. He did allow us to move some stuff around in his cage yesterday, but then he got tired of us being there lol. I'm just worried his cage will get too dirty b4 he comes out

How old is he? Does he just come after you to bite or only if you try to touch/hold him? You could try giving him time, and in intervals through each day, sit right beside the cage, even with the door open, and talk to him. I would even eat next to the cage and express how i enjoyed it, being upbeat and conversational.
It will take him some time to absorb it all, but just being consistent, he will see that you are no threat in time.

h's better now, he doesn't bite now. He's still not to keen on being picked up tho, he'll come out and walk around, but not big on being picked up
