Crusso the Jenday Conure
Hi guys, I just noticed that Crusso's missing a claw on his 2nd toe(?) The first toe is short and the 2nd one is quite a bit longer. The shop I got him from did some grooming which included filing down his beak and trimming claws/clipping wings. Could he have cut that claw completely off? I suppose it will grow back? He keeps that foot tucked under his wing a lot.

When I got Aleta from the breeder, her long toe was missing the nail too. I had her into the vet within a few days getting her, so I mentioned to the vet. She didn't seem concerned and figured it would grow back. 5 months later and it still hasn't grown back. Doesn't impact her holding, perching, or landing skills. It hasn't bothered her, other than not being able to scratch quite as well, but that's what I'm for. :D

It will most likely not grow back if it is completely gone, and so long as it is healed over (i.e. no scabs or anything) it will not affect his abilities to eat, climb ext... in the future. I doubt a groomer accidentally clipped an entire nail off, more than likely, another bird bit it off at some point or he had an accident. IF it is not healed over (i.e. you see a scab, blood, discharge ext where the nail should be) it is probably best to see a vet to prevent infection. The inner toes on parrots are shorter than the outer toes, thats just how their feet are. Unless there is an open wound, the most likely reason he keeps that foot up is because it's his less dominant one. Most parrots rest with their dominant foot on the perch and the other tucked up.

P.S. 2 of my parents birds are missing talons. The cockatoo bit off the females amazons talon, and she repaid him a few years later (they do not interact anymore). Neither have suffered any ill effects from missing talons, and neither of them ever grew them back in the 20+ years since they lost them.

My female cockatiel lost a toe to a rat when she was a baby just learning to fly and landed on the rat cage. (we covered them but somehow she landed on this one spot...) I got there as fast as I could but they were still able to catch a toe before I yanked her off the cage. She's about 4 now and doesn't suffer any ill effects. She has a little curled nail nub that doesn't bother her and it doesn't grow either from what I have seen.
