2 year old Rainbow Lorikeet - Rio
Rio has been with us for one week :) he is not as nervous as before but still wont come to me if i stand by his cage and wont take any food from my hand. I have read that older rainbow lorikeets are very hard to tame and sometimes remain very nervous around humans :( I hope it's not so with Rio as I would hate to keep him in his cage all the time as i feel they need out of cage time

A week is not a long time. Didnt Rio come from a bad situation? Just keep spending time w/him, you could leave the cage door open sometimes & let him climb out when he feels comfortable. Just keep offering him treats thru the bars & let him decide when he's ready.

Please don't get discouraged, these things take time. I would try sitting a chair next to his cage, then talk, read and sing to him. He will eventually wonder over to see what your all about. Now, this can take weeks and even months to form a working bond with a bird. No matter how tame they are, if they are a second hand bird, it may take extra time to to form that bond.

I got my Senegal from Craigslist. I am Max's 3rd flock, and Max isn't even a year old yet. And I have only had max for 15 days now. I spend at least an hour by him every day. I have a folding chair that I place by his cage and I will read, or sing, or check my email on my phone. And of course, I talk to Max. I also bring in veggies in a bowl and I eat in front of him--that piques his interest. Have a few extra, in case your bird has interest. I open his cage and let him come out on his terms. It took a while for him to gain my trust, but he will land on me. He even stands on my head (see avatar photo). He still hasn't stepped up for me yet. Enjoy the smallest victories :) It will happen :)
