Teka~Red Lored Amazon 20 years old,. . Ruthie ~ 16 year old Ruby Macaw, . .
So we have had Ruthie for just over a month now. Though we have her vet records from the visit she had just before we got her, we wanted to get an initial visit with our own new vet. So today was the day for both her and Teka.

I have felt that Teka's lower beak was starting to starting to stick out too far on one side. They agreed and trimmed it for us. It looks so much better now. But it seems that we will have to have it done every 2-3 months. He took the scary process very well.

Ruthie's stool had been looking like chocolate pudding so I really wanted to get their thoughts. They took a fecal culture that did not look too bad and put her on some meds. I had brought the vet records that I was given at the rescue. So our new vet called and got all of the remaining records faxed. I requested a copy since they are our birds now and they gave me all 39 pages!! Of those only 4 are Teka's, but 35 are Ruthie's. They go all the way back to 2007. I was shocked and very happy to get more of a history about her, and that I did.

The previous owner had gotten her as a baby from a breeder in Green Bay. So I now know which birth date is the correct one. Ruthie has a "habit" of laying 3 eggs a year in December. In Jan 2009 she became egg bound, and got very sick for a few months. Her weight dropped by 100g after laying 2 of 3 eggs over 7 days. Reading the history I now know exactly what to look for when she is looking to lay eggs so I can try and prevent that from happening ( a great thing to find out). I can now see that I was right about her weight being low when we got her. She was up to 1262g when she was healthy and close to 1000g when we got her. She was kept in a 3x3x4 dog crate and in egg season was given a night cage to discourage nesting. Being here must feel like complete freedom to her. Her name was indeed Rufus until 2008 when she started laying eggs, then they changed it to Ruthie. I also found out she was micro-chipped in 2008. That would have been nice to know since I was told she is not chipped. There is so much more but that is all of the big stuff, and I think it was a huge find.

She is up to 1190g today after being with us for a month btw.

The old vet did a great job changing all of her records over to my name when we the rescue told them we adopted her. But I did actually come across the original owners name and another contact person for when the owner was out of town. I stared at those names for a min trying to decide what I should do morally since I was told that the owner died. Though I trust our rescue I decided to look anyways. Yup, they told the truth, kinda sad. On the bright side I am starting to find older pics of Ruthie that she had posted around the web. It's kinda like a treasure hunt for our big Macaw's history now. I would love to call the person listed as the emergency contact. But I just think that would be crossing the line and I'm not comfortable doing it. So the journey continues.

Glad it went so well and you got all that back information on ruthie. The more you know I the better prepared you can be:). I love the carrier by the way I have one as well, but a little earlier model. A little expensive but they fit the whole tail:p

I we all expected her to fit just fine. But her tail is 6 inches longer than that carrier. The person I got it from uses it to transport her Greenwings with no issue. I just happen to have a Mac that's a bit on the large side. :D

What a carrier:)!! Thats so neat to find out more history on her. Dont you wish she could just tell you:):p

Blackhawk,

I love that carrier. Can you tell me who makes it so I can go look for one?

thanks

Cool development, Steve... Glad to hear about it :)

That's so cool! I have absolutely none of Darcy's history because he just landed on someone's shoulder in a park!

Isn't it wonderful you were able to get so much info from vet files. Kinda like being adopted & someone drops a large file of info about your real family. You might never contact them, but it gives you a connection to a part of her history. :red1:

Glad Ruthie is gaining weight & doing great with ya'll. She is a gorgeous girl!:D

Wow, Steve, that was a whole lotta news there! You're right, JUST like a treasure/history hunt.

I'm thrilled to hear Ruthie is doing so well!!! She truly is in a dream home with you and J Marie. :)

Are you going to dread December now, in fear she will lay eggs?

And thank you for the awesome update on Ruthie. :D

I'm not very confident that she will be on that timeline anymore. She no longer has that dog crate to nest in. Her lighting cycles are different. I'm sure her temperature ranges are very different since the birds are kept in our garden room. That room has more of a tropical environment and humidity. With an 8 foot patio door in that room I think she would likely be on a normal spring nesting cycle with the sun shining through, if she gets to that point. Especially with Teka being a male housed right next to her, his hormones could also have an impact.

We will see.
