I didn't know this as of yesterday after my conure flew to the kitchen where I was chopping garlic. He left his bowl of seeds when he smelled the garlic being chopped! He took a clove off the chopping board and I let him eat it.

I read online that it is bad because it can potentially cause anemia by causing red blood cells to rupture. In my other search, people said it is safe and beneficial due to its great anti bacterial and anti-oxidant properties, among other things. One even said it was recommended by their Avian Vet.

So as you can see, I am confused! I'd love to give it to him, at least in moderation (like 1 clove every week?) but I want to make sure it won't kill him.

This is one of the better explanations & arguments against letting them eat it Onions, Garlic & Birds

But then there are people who maintain an attitude that "I've done such & such for years and it's never bothered my bird..." or there are people who have smoked all their lives and never developed cancer, while their neighbor never smoked & died of lung cancer, so, you are your bird's steward and are the only one to make the final decision, based on the information you have at hand.....

It can be safe in minute amounts, but it can also be very deadly. I don't think anyone can say just how much is safe for a bird to consume before it becomes deadly.
