Khepri - Blue and Gold Macaw
Hello guys!

So, part of the reason why I joined this forum was to look at recipes and share some of my own! I dug up an old recipe of mine to share with you guys.

Name: Quickie Bird Bread
Prep Time: 5 Minutes
Cook Time:
20 Minutes
Target Audience: Macaws, Amazons, Greys... can be adapted for smaller parrots by tweaking the size of the fresh ingredients.

----------------------------------------

Ingredients
:blue1: 1 box Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix
:red1: 1/3 cup milk
:blue: 2 eggs
:blue1: 1/2 cup Pelleted food (Zupreem, Kaytee, etc... pellets only!)
:red1: 1/4 cup Dried/Frozen/Fresh Fruit OR Vegetable. (I used Craisins last time)

:green: Optional: 1 Tablespoon of Kaytee "Eggcite" or some filed off Cuttlebone dust. Keep ingredients somewhat small so you can blend it together and give the bread space to bake! Don't overwhelm the batter with ingredients... lol!

----------------------------------------

Directions

- Preheat oven to 400 degrees
- Combine all Ingredients directly into mixing bowl and stir.
- Pour contents into a 9x9 baking pan (or 8x8)
- Smooth it out evenly... it will be shallow
- Bake in oven for 15-20 minutes... I like it crispier so I usually go for 20 minutes

Want to jazz it up? When you remove it from the oven, you can smear a thin, thin layer of Peanut Butter over the top of it. The peanut butter will melt and almost appear to be a "glaze" on the bread. Feel free to scrape cuttle-bone dust over this while the bread is cooling

Want to save it for later? You can make these in an 8x8 or 9x9 pan and let them cool out of the oven. Wait until it is completely cool, remove the bread as ONE PIECE (do not pre-cut) and slide it into a freezer bag in the gallon size. It will fit perfectly and stack well in your freezer. When you take it out, I recommend letting it thaw and then putting it in the oven for 5-10 minutes at 350 to warm it up again (and then you can slather the thin layer of peanut butter on it if you wish!)

Cut it up! I cut mine into small cubes or small rectangles. Then I toss them all in a bag and put them in the fridge.

But I don't have _____! If you do not have pelleted food.... then just add 1/2 cup more of some sort of fruit or vegetable. Be mindful that frozen fruit tends to retain more water... so if you add frozen strawberries your bread might not only be pink... but a bit waterier. If you do not have dried/fresh/frozen fruits or vegetables then just add a bit more pellets.

I hope this has been helpful to someone... anyone... or at least a fun read. Here's a picture of Khepri enjoying a piece for herself:

Enjoy!

That's great! And Khepri is gorgeous!!!

Thank you so much! My bird hates eating pellets and will dump all their food if they have pellets in their cup... so this has been an awesome way to sneak in those goodies. I also make a wicked Pellet-Oatmeal... mmm-mmm!

Thank you again for the lovely compliments!

Awesome! Thanks :)

Thank you so much! I have an oatmeal type recipe too that I need to try to re-invent (as I lost the recipe). I love cooking for my bird!

After she got some bread with her lunch, she went and talked and talked and talked and talked. So I guess it was a BIG hit. I figured out that she knew how to say "Can I have a nut?" (sometimes too fast to really figure out that's what she was saying) and "Thank you" (only when receiving said nut!) and "Skipper" (I'm assuming she was named that at one point)

She also said Hi with the same inflection that I say it to her ;.;! SHE'S LEARNING!

Lol anyways, I am so glad that you like it!

Ooooo.... I think I'm going to make some for Chili tomorrow!! She hasn't been eating her pellets lately since she fills up on her fresh foods and chop mix (not complaining! Lol) but I think I might be able to sneak pellets in this way hehehe

It looks great, I use to make a similar birdie bread.

If you can, try to buy a corn bread/muffin mix without any sugar(jiffy has sugar)

I didn't realize it had sugar, will do next time. I had seen so many people I had talked bird recipes with used Jiffy that I figured it was okay. I'll try to find one with minimal sugar/sodium that is sold pretty openly so people can find it and use it :)

I didn't crush the pellets, it sorta looks like a Biscotti or little strips of Fruitcake when it's cut up. The pellets soaked up a bit of the formula and softened. My bird actually seeks them out when she was eating them today.

But! If you crush them up before you bake them in (say you put them in a coffee grinder or something) they will be undetectable in the bread and your bird can't pick them out even if they tried ^^

THAT'S why I'd want to crush them lol knowing Chili, she'd probably pick them out and toss 'em if I didn't make them undetectable lol!

Definitely do it then! I myself want to pick up a coffee bean grinder just so I can make pellet dust for some recipes. Someone here posted something where you can grind a cup of pellet dust and wet it and mix it with some seeds (or maybe other things) so that when the bird picks through the food they still get some pellets... or that they like it more because it's not in hard pellet shape and think it's some new cool brand of oatmeal or something.

I love trying to get my bird to try new things... such a challenge LOL!

I have a mini blender thing I think would do great at grinding them down, so we'll see how it works tomorrow!

I love seeing her try new things lol today I gave her a couple blackberries- Ohmygoodness she LOVED them!!

When i did Gilbert's bird bread the other day, i used my little cuisinart chopper/food processor and put pellets, carrots and peppers in there together into a 'crumble' texture. Would work well for the little guys or the ones who pick through their food, and throw certain textures, sizes, shapes, colors......

I made a batch of this birdie bread today...I used my little cuisinart chopper to chop up the pellets, some pine nuts, and blackberries.

She LOVED it!

It looks like she is a zombie bird with those Blackberries! LOL! And I'm so glad the bread worked out for her! Yay!! She is so cute <3!! I might try to incorporate some nuts in with the next batch, that's a great idea.

Oh yes- blackberries are her new favorite food lol and I discovered yesterday that she likes pine nuts... And it's a great way for her to get her pellets!
She had a fabulous time reducing it down to crumbs, so I'm not sure how much she actually ate lol. But normally she doesn't really go for nuts  and she needs to gain some weight, so I figured it'd be a good way to sneak in some nuts hahaha
