Hi Everyone

I need a little advice and input. I recently bought a Yellow ringneck parrot. She was handfed but then put in a cage by the petshop with other birds now i know after some time she will get used to me but what worries me is there is a balled spot on the back of her head. The petshop has told me she is still young but im unsure as iv'e seen younger ones with all there feather's. I love animals and i just want to know if she is healthy and that this is normal.

Please advise Photos below

That doesn't seem normal to me I have never seen a young bird that was weened with such a large bald spot, people with more experience will be able to help more with your bird

but the rust on that cage is harmful to birds, so you will need to invest in a new one

I would take her to an avian vet. She is either sick or has been plucked by the other birds.
And yes that cage is in horrible condition to keep an animal in it.

I'm not a vet so I can only guess, but I think maybe another bird over preened her and plucked them out. Birds can't pluck their own heads so she didn't do it to herself by plucking. She could have done it rubbing it on something though.

But, there is a reason for it, and you may need to rule out an illness or poor diet or mites or who knows what.

It's always a very good idea though with a new bird to take it into an avian vet for a complete wellness check. They will run blood work and check for bacterial and fungal infections as well as examine the bird physically. And it also gives the vet a baseline information for the future if your bird gets sick.

Thank You for your response i did notice the rust and am planing to buy a new cage this week trust me and thank you once again. She was with other birds in the cage by the petshop they couldn't have plucked her maybe as i read they do do that sometimes(correct me if i am wrong)

I would also have a check up done. It is always a good idea when getting a new pet. I would bet she has been plucked by other birds. She is a BEAUTIFUL parrot. Congrats on your new addition!

Could be necessary to have this bird checked for metal toxicity.

So quick I just got her Yesterday But that was the only cage i had.

I also thought the same she was the smallest in the cage by the petshop the others were stunning but i did notice hey plucked each other and she doesn't look too nice now with her feathers and all (i dont really care cause every bird is stunning regardless of looks)but with some TLC i'm sure i can get her beutiful again But believe you me that checkup is defnately happening.

And thanks once more to all of you for your support and advice If she starts looking better ill put some photos up for all of you to see :)

She could get metal poisoning the first time she grabs the bar with her beak. You should always get a clean cage for a bird, if that was the only cage you had you should have bought a new one before you got the bird! You shouldn't have put her in that cage in the first place because rust is extremely dangerous.

If she is indeed a young bird it is very possible that the parent birds have plucked her & possibily the sibblings. In which case sometimes if the feather folicals have been damaged the feathers don't grow back. The other problem that concerns me is PBFD (Beak & Feather Disease)
