13yr. old male umbrella cockatoo,
we call him Amigo!

7yr. old Goffin cockatoo, she IS Sassy!!
I was ready to take Sassy to the vet for this soft lump I had discovered, just above her chest bone. The next time I checked for it, the next day, I couldn't find it. I had always assumed that the crop was real close to the beak, just an inch or less, below. Amigo always had this hard lump in that area and I thought that was the crop.

Amigo had a very active day today and flew in to eat more than normal amounts, of his dinner feeding. He came to sit with me, afterwards, and I noticed a soft lump, just above his chest bone!! Is that the crop?!

The crop is above the chest bone...sounds like your baby was just full

Yes, dont panic, that is what that is, its just above the breast bone. I guess i take for granted that we can see Rome's. If you part the feathers you can see it better when its full. Feathers dont actually grow on that part of the skin. Roc engorges himself every night so its super obvious when hes full. We check Rome's during dinner, if she stops eating and its not full we try something else. Usually its jus because she wants something different. Both of my fids completely fill theirs right before they go to bed at night. :D

Thank you for your response, I can't believe I didn't know this! Do you know what the hard knot, an inch below the beak of Amigo, might be? Adams apple, possibly?

lol i wish i had a picture of pickle with me on my usb or something. im at uni at the moment, but because hes bald he could answer your question quite easily without feathers in the way.
sounds like it was just the crop, if it comes back after dinner lol

and when they're not stretching out or standing up straight their necks kindof make an s shape folded into their chest, so the lump below his beak might just be neck bone...

ill see if i can post a picture of pickle tonight :)

Thanks tab, but nothing came up. I'm realizing that I knew nothing of crops except that food went there to get moisture before getting digested!
