I made this in about '93 or '94. It's not pretty, but it was cheap and functional and that's what matters most. I found the coat rack at a thrift store for a couple of dollars. At first I used cardboard boxes as a poop tray - the ones that canned goods come in that have 2 inch sides - but they needed to be replaced often and then I found the blue tray at the same thrift store for a couple of dollars at most. I stopped using it years ago because it had gotten a little wobbly and I had a nicer looking commercially made stand to replace it. I might start using it again, I like the height, about 51 inches (129cm).

This is the type of coat rack used

The top isn't used, so this is what's left

I cut a hole in the center of the tray and I used vinyl tape to create flexible form fitting seal to stop poop from running all the way down the post and hitting the floor. The vinyl tape needs to be replaced once in a while, so I did that today.

And it's finished by drilling a hole in the perch wood to fit the bolt that on the top of the pole (where the original top attached) and twisting it on. This perch has been replaced several times.
For normal use I cover the tray with paper.

What a clever idea!! I'm trying to get a training perch made for Percy but I'm struggling to get the right materials. This is a good plan and easy enough for me to do!

What did you do about the varnish on the coat rack?

I have to admit the answer to that question is, nothing.
I did this very early in my bird years and didn't know that such things could be a potential hazard. And now, considering the decade of use before it went into storage and the surprisingly few light scratch marks on the top of the post, I'm not going to put any effort into worrying about it
