Bella (Vosmaeri Eclectus Female) + Dexter (Red Sided Eclectus Male) + Gerry (Vosmaeri Eclectus Male)
I was in the sitting room when I heard clanking metal and a sound I haven't heard Bella make before. I was worried...

I rushed to her room, only to find that she has suddenly decided that she does like water after all, and was expressing this by attempting to bathe in her inadequately sized water bowl! - Thus resulting in the bowl door clanking. It looks like I need to buy her a more suitable bath ASAP.

Not only was this bathing shocking in itself - as she has never been too keen on showering and has never bathed in her drinking water before, but she was also repeatedly shoving her head underwater and squawking through the water! That's the noise I heard her making from the sitting room. Underwater squawking... I've heard it all now!

....or maybe not

Has anyone else experienced these aquatic audio performances from their fid(s), or at least heard of this behaviour before?

Or is Bella a weirdo? :D

I still can't believe it. I was all prepared to find her entangled with a toy or something after I heard her strange noises...
and then there she was, having a wonderful time, splashing around and squawking bubbles!

I've found another weirdo mentioned on this site:
Training Tips and Advice For Eclectus Parrots
On this page, it reads:
"One of our Eclectus males "Cletus" has a hilarious habit of putting his beak into his water bowl and talking under water. He will spend a good half hour prattling away to himself, blowing bubbles and yabbering with his beak-and sometimes head-underwater!"

That is too much! I'd love to hear it. Salty likes to talk into his empty food bowl, and that sounds weird enough ( like an Amazon talking from a bad 1920's radio); an underwater talking Ekkie - who could even imagine this. Can you try and record this?

I did manage to capture a little bit of it, it's very dark (lighting wise), but I haven't posted a video before. I have a YouTube account, so I'll see if I can work out how to 'upload'.

I've just realised that I should be able to upload the video using the 'photobucket' thingy I've been using for the pictures...

Bathing in the bowl itself is. It at all unusual. Parker does it occasionally, as did my old conure. But the talking into the water?? That I would love to see!

Very interesting article and wonderful to see Eb Cravens mentioned, love his writing and a very nice chap in the flesh. :)

I had a bit of a scout about online and I can't find any footage of another parrot squawking or talking underwater.

Like I said, I managed to catch a tiny bit of her antics! Sorry for the dark footage. She squawked both out of and into the water during this clip, but I wish I'd had my phone ready to film straight away, I kinda missed the funniest bit. I'm definitely going to get her a bath and see if I can catch her doing it 'properly'...

If not for the video and audio, I would not had fully believed this was true and from a Parrot that thus far hated showering!

We use a thick clear glass pie plate (our DYH Amazon has not been able to turn it over)! It was a bit of an effort get our Amazon to use it at first. It took a week for the pie plate to make to the cage top. Slowly, introducing it to 'his' area. Once in place, big splash time, worst than a 6 year old with one of those little step in pools on a hot day!

I am more than willing to find a way to submerge the wife's bird in a full tub and see what sounds he makes.

Way too funny! That has to be about the oddest bird behavior I've ever heard of. Quite the character you have there =)

What'd be the chance of you getting a recording of Salty talking into his bowl? I love the way you described it as sounding "like a bad 1920s radio"! His other videos are definitely of star quality, maybe he could learn an old-time song to sing into his bowl?!

Maybe in time she might learn to talk some human words too, and then she really would be talking into her water instead of just the squawking. I'll keep you posted in terms of any developments in this area :) Also if I manage to find another eclectus video online showing similar behaviour I will post it here. In the meantime I need to decide on a new bird bath!

Looks like I've got some reading up to do on this Eb Cravens character...

That's hilarious.
It took alot of self control to not laugh out loud the moment I realised what she was doing, I knew it would disturb her and that she'd likely stop, so I had to just bite my tongue whilest I fumbled with my phone to try to capture this spectacular spectacle!

She's one crazy critter! She's always making me laugh. I might follow your lead and look into some kind of kitchen item to use as a bath, as all available in-cage bird baths seem quite small...

:D:D Hahahah Silly Bella!!!!
Harry and Toon always splash in their water bowl if they hear a buzzing noise ..... like the vacuum cleaner, blender or mixer.
It is known that a parrot a buzzing sound compares with a tropical rainstorm and go therefore bathing :D
