Currently.. congo african grey
I have read that Greys speaking abilities are "best" at a year of age (let's not debate semantics since I don't recall the exact phrasing).

My question is what great event happens at a year? Does speech become clearer or the ability to learn/vocabulary explodes at a year?

My grey has been speaking since at least 4 months old (I don't know about prior). An inexperienced listener would not he able to understand most of his speech however.

He IS absolutely hilarious though šŸ˜‚

Thanks in advance!

I think the meaning is that.
Most African greyā€™s start talking around 1 year old.
That doesnā€™t mean they canā€™t start talking sooner.
Butā€¦.. Some CAGā€™s just donā€™t talk much and imitate sounds.

When we brought Bella home her most repeated noise was a clanging noise that reminded us of a flag pole buckle on a windy day.
Firs thing she learned to say was go, go, go.
she was copying me while playing a PC racing game.

Bella is a surprise as far as learning new words.

My Amazons rarely learn a new word.
When they do it takes weeks of practice till we can make out what they are saying.

Bella comes out with something new on average about every two weeks and most of the time itā€™s clearly understandable the first time.

And another thing.
Some CAGā€™s speak more clearly than others.
take two examples.

Einstein tex Texas parrot (YouTube).
He speaks super clear even if he has a slight Texas accent.

And Cosmo (Also on YouTube).
Cosmo was a rescue and has a funny gravely voice that is harder for me to understand but is incredibly funny.
He likes to argue with his owner about how she (the owner) has feathers and Cosmo has hair.
I swear itā€™s as funny as the ā€œwho is on first ā€œ routine Byā€¦..Who was it abbot and Costello.
