Catalina Macaw
Hi all! This is my boy Mango... I was told he was a Catalina but I've been researching and now I'm not so sure. Does anyone have any experience in detecting between the two? :09:

Though I'm no macaw expert, I'm fairly good at visual identification. This LOOKS like a typically colored Catalina to me. Although the hybrids can vary, and I've seen Catalina's who were uncharacteristically reddish. IMO you have what they told you you have.

I'm sure macaw people will come along and tell you HOW to tell the differences... I don't know the differences, I can just tell ;).

Thank you! So much for my "research" huh? Ha!! He's pretty mouthy, which I have heard is a Scarlet trait- But I started looking at photos and started confusing myself!

Looks like a catalina to me as well.

Me too, he could be Hubert's double! (Hubert is our Catalina)

LOL, he was called that when we got him...... :) He's such a clown!

I cant tell his size [that would help]. Ive had 2 Catalinas and I would think his coloring is more Harlequin to me .

These two hybrids can look very much alike but your bird sure looks like my Catalina.

Mango is a real beauty, Harlequin or Catalina!

Sunset, I also think Hubert is a super cute name!

I had the same question about mine and I scoured the Internet. What I noticed is that most photos of harlequins have no red right above their beak (all green) and Catalina's usually have a splotch or more of red. I also saw that the chest tends to be to the yellow side of orange (Catalina) and the harlequin is closer to the red side to about a standard orange. Although that is what I observed in photos, what I read indicated coloration can be same for both.

This is a Catalina. There is some variation in the beak as it can be black or more whiteish. Harlequins are a more reddish orange. Here are two pics of my 21 year old Catalina; Doogie Click pictures to enlarge:

My bird was named when I got him and said his name so I kept it, but SunKist I think would be a cute name.

Temperament usually isn't the best judge of hybrid in my opinion, but maybe that's because I'm unlucky as the two Catalina's and shamrock macaws that I've been around have strayed very far from what people say their personality/temperament is.

That being said I have no idea what bird you could have, as harlequins and Catalina's look very alike. I would just stick with what's been told to you, or whatever you want haha.

From the pictures I saw online and one in a pet store near us, he doesn't look as much like a Harlequin to me. There is a Harlequin in a local pet store and the colors are a little different. And plenty of people tell me Scarlets are more nippy so it sounds like a trait passed down from them. Beautiful bird though, he's gorgeous either way ;)

I adopted this macaw about 3 years ago, the people I adopted her from said she'd a Harlequin (they are not the original owners) Now I'm not sure, what do you guys think, Harlequin or Catalina?

The bird in the picture looks like a second generation Catalina. Essentially instead of breeding a b&g with a Scarlet, they bred two Catalinas together. Hope that helps.
