I've been searching the web for homemade remedies and supplements that can be made from natural products to help boost and keep my Macaws healthy.
Please, if you have your own, share your homemade remedies and supplements.
I was thinking of boiling Garlic and Lime (lemon) leaves for them to drink (when cooled) or Aloe Vera. Here in the Cayman Islands we're free of all diseases and virus that can be found elsewhere in the world but we're still susceptible to the common parasites/worms that can be found in your household pets. All my macs are kept in an outdoor aviary and I was thinking of giving them some sort of natural supplement to keep them happy. I try to keep their diet as natural as possible. So was hoping I can give them some sort of treat/supplement that can be made easily rather than a manufactured chemically produced supplement.
So far majority of what I've found consist ofā¦
Natural Remedies for an Ill Parrot | Birdtrader
All birds, including parrots, cannot catch colds so what looks like a cold in an ill parrot could well be something else. A birdās respiratory system is very complicated so any wheezing, discharge or breathing difficulties should be examined by a vet. That said, there are some natural remedies that can be very effective in what looks like a parrot cold.
Sick Parrot Remedies
ā¢ Echinacea is very good for an ill parrot and can do well for its general immune system and helps a sick parrot overcome the poxvirus. Various seaweeds are also very good at treating fungal and viral issues.
ā¢ Aloe detox has proved very effective in some cases where more traditional medicines have proved ineffective in aiding the sick parrot. Aloe detox contains aloe Vera gel, pulp and a blend of milk thistle, dandelion, burdock, Echinacea, green tea, blue cohosh and red clover.
ā¢ Cayenne pepper is quite a common appetite stimulator for parrots as they love the taste of it. If an ill parrot has stopped eating, it is an effective way for him to start again. Similarly, most parrots will become quite stressed when ill, chamomile is very good for helping in this case. Not only does chamomile help to relax the parrot, it also helps to kill yeast fungi and other bacteria.
ā¢ Pau dāarco is very effective at treating fungal conditions in both humans and parrots. It helps to ease candida and any intestinal parasites that may be causing the ill parrot discomfort. This has given it the nickname of āmiracle barkā. Slippery elm is good for coughing and vomiting.
ā¢ Cinnamon is good for treating mild fungal and bacterial conditions in an ill parrot and has proved potentially effective at treating candida and aspergillus.
ā¢ As with all medicines, it is important to get the dosage correct. The process of treating a parrot cold could become much harder with too much medicine. All of these herbal remedies will be available at health food shops and the dosage will be given for humans. As a general rule, divide the stated dosage by ten for an adult parrot.
ā¢ Obviously, it is important when treating an ill parrot that you give him the correct medicine. Some herbs help your sick parrot but others can be toxic. Your vet will be able to give you a detailed list but you should avoid borage, calamus, coltsfoot, chaparral, ephedra, comfrey, germander, licorice, life root, ma huang, lobelia, pennyroyal, pokeroot, sassafras and yohimbe.
