Just curious as I saw an AD for a Blue Sided GCC... Is there even such a thing as a Blue Sided Green Cheek Conure? It looks like one of my 'normal' GCC's..

Also, my yellow-sided has a blue band across the back of it's neck.. I've only ever seen that on some of my normals.. What colour would it be classified as..? Still just a yellow-sided?

I've never heard of a blue sided GCC, maybe they have a Turquoise mutation?

I can't say anything about your yellow sided, I don't know much about them

I thought maybe that might be it, but in the photo the bird looks just like mine, only a tiny touch more blue behind the neck. Turquoise have the grey tails yes? Because the one in the Ad had a bright maroon/red tail.

This is my girl below. Colours aren't quite right in this light, but you get the general idea.

No worries. ^^

It sounds to me like the person either knows nothing about birds, or is trying to get rip off the someone who knows nothing.

Your bird is adorable

Hmmm yeah, I might send them a polite message stating it's not a Blue-sided then.

Thankies :D She's only 7 weeks old.. a handful but she has chosen me..I was going to keep her brother.. but no, she has attached herself hopelessly to me. And because of that now I'm hopelessly attached to her haha.

I had a blue sided Conure, but it was because my pineapple decided to dye his neck feathers on a blue toy. :p

She looks like a normal green cheek to me???????

About the blue now... does it mean anything when it's on the neck? Yes, and no...... there are different subspecies of green cheek conures, so their sizes and colors do vary... from yellows and whites, to blues and reds to even green! Unless someone has been specifically breeding the various subspecies, I consider the majority of green cheek conures within captivity to be hybrids because breeders didn't pay attention to the differences and hybridized the subspecies together... and there are breeders who are also hybridizing them with other species, not realizing that the birds are separate species. The most common species green cheeks are hybridized to are maroon bellied conures and black capped conures. I also wonder how often some of them might have been hybridized to pearly conures.... but eh, who can say?

Here's a page that shows some differences between the subspecies.

She is... o_O That's why I found the Ad rather odd..

Oh! I think someone showed me that not long ago but I didn't read through it properly. I believe the parents (of my GCC's) are the australis subspecies.. The female has the blue on the back of her neck etc. as well as the male.. But then how do I truly know/find out if they are pure subspecies?

Mmm :/ I used to have a Pearly Conure.. She died just 3 days after i bought her... I was so distressed for months... Had a necropsy done because there was no possible way for her to have gotten sick in my care in just 3 days.. I knew Pearlys were susceptible to disease so i was extra careful. She had major issues wrong with every organ, and multiple diseases. So I'm not keen on ever gettign a pearly again.. Apparently the species is majorly inbred?

Sorry to hear about your pearly! :(

When you have a species not commonly kept within captivity, and people can't always recognize what they have, you end up with inbreds and/or hybrids. The hybrids actually end up being healthier than both parents, as long as the two species are closely related.

Currently, there is no way to determine if you have a pure subspecies or not unless the ancestry can be traced back to wild caught imports.

I've also posted that link before so might have seen it in another post.
