Galah Cockatoo

Wow, i have been posting threads on macaws, cockatoos, and other rare birds, however i get a lot of people telling me rosies are the way to go for me. I never really looked into galahs, i just don't know why though. Are galahs good free-flyers? Also, are they as loud as the other cockatoos? I don't mind the noise i was just curious. I was told they aren't as prone to self mutilation as the moluccans or umbrellas, is that also true? Thanks in advance. If you want post a pic of a galah if you have one.

They can be loud, but not compared to other cockatoos. Some do self mutilate, but it seems whenever they do they always have a reason for doing so. My galah was abused, on a bad diet, and was also very sick. When I read online about plucking galahs they seem to be have been neglected, abused, or a illness causes them to pluck. The white cockatoos are the emotional packages, galahs are down to earth. Search galah screaming on youtube and it will show how loud they are. I've never once felt the need to cover my ears when Rosie screams.

As for free flying I think I'll let the videos tell you that First video is my favorite. Galahs are such agile fliers and so eager to learn, makes them great for free flying. I think macaws and galahs are the best free fliers, but any species is capable of free flying.

They do fly beautifully, a big reason for that is they have huge wings for their size. Similar to raptor wings(not bueto).

You can see the huge wings in these two photos





Galahs are closer related to the black cockatoos than the white, so it's no surprise they have similar wings. They also share the same long tail.



Random, but I just noticed how black cockatoos totally have eagle wings!

Copperarabian, OMG! Thank you for posting that! I am new to owning a rosie and I am having a ball! I take him out several times a day with her harness to let him fly a bit. He is amazing at flying in the house. I need to study up on free flying, I am very interested in training Nigel. He is still so young (just 8 weeks today) Right now he is on the java tree with Dorothy and he is kind of messy looking with the remnants that I couldn't get off of his formula/peanut butter mixture. Hate to mess up those beautiful pink feathers! LOL

Wow, black cockatoos are beautiful as well. The wings themselves aren't that large but the feathers are MASSIVE! i need to do more research on galahs. I probably know the answer but would you recommend a galah to me?

yeah, I'd recommend a galah for you. I'm always talking about how they need to be fully flighted and you're already committed to this no matter what species you get since your planning to take a free flight course. Definitely research lots though(which you said you doing anyway) and make sure it's really what you want. Don't let us change your mind from getting the bird you truly want.

In that case i'm buying a Kea! Joking i couldn't properly take care of one. Been looking at hawk-headeds, caiques, galahs, gang-gangs, amazons,toucans and macaws. One thing i don't like about galahs, is in all the videos i've seen they've seem like they are dull in personality. I mean, i know they are packed with personality, but i mean they don't show it well in the videos i've seen. Bandit from birdtricks is an example. I am probably wrong about this, but i just wanted to get my opinion in. If you want you can post me a video of Rosie, to help me better understand I think rosie is a beautiful bird and so is Kenji. I'd love to see more of them

Galahs are full of spunkiness. Theyre not dull or boring.

What makes you say birdtricks is a bad site? i have friends who took the free flight course and loved it.

I'm a first time Galah owner, coming up to three weeks now. She's an older bird with issues that we're working through - she's a very shy, nervous bird although we've made a lot of progress. Even at this point though she's packed with personality, does little dances when she wants my attention, enjoys the toys I've put in her cage (although her favourite toys are the ones I cruelly keep out of reach: phone, laptop, tv remote etc).

One thing that might give the impression of being less interesting than other birds that I was very aware of when visiting her prior to bringing her home is that she doesn't fuss for attention if it's not offered. She was in a roomful of Ducorps, LSC and Bare Eyed cocaktoos, and the other birds, clamoured for attention the moment anyone walking into the room: Alice would just sit at the back of her cage until I started talking directly to her, at which point she'd come and play through the bars. Even at home now if I want her to engage with me I generally have to initiate things, otherwise she'll just sit watching me and squeaking to remind me she's there. But if galahs do seem a little less keen to draw your attention I'd take that as shyness/cautiousness, not lack of personality. Personally in the long run I'd rather have a sweet and gentle bird than a petulant attention seeker!

She's also incredibly quiet. The rare occasions we get a full on shriek it's a show of anger or fright - otherwise she has a regular repertoire of cheeps, squeaks and cackles, the best of which are really sweet and the worst of which are at least inoffensive.

The wingspan really took me back the first few times she spread her wings - Copperarabian's right, it's like having a falcon on your wrist! Alice came clipped on one side but she has a couple of new feathers come through, and can get airborne for short distances. Realistically I think we have a way to go before she'll trust me enough to introduce a harness, but it is something I'd love to do and the sooner that wing is back to full feathers the better.

LOL! My budgie tore off my spacebar so now i have to use that little button where the key is now...-.- I don't know how people say budgies aren't as destructive as larger parrots... they might not do it to the extremes, but when they do... well you can kiss it goodbye. When she was a baby, i gave her this washcloth set on the floor of ehr cage to sleep on so she stays warm, the next morning it was just a bunch of threads. lol she still has that cloth, she takes it bye the corner, opens her cage door, and drags it to me on the other side of the house, wanting me to play with her...

hahahaha, I bet! They are all so different, and you have all your doors still open. I think everyone here will be excited to see what you finally decide on when you buy your baby
