Hahn's Macaw (Coco)
Hi, we are new to parrot keeping, but we have decided to buy a hand-reared Hahn's Macaw :green2: and would like some help on which cage to buy.

Some details about the living situation
- Will be in the corner of the living room
- Will have significant (several hours per day) time outside of the cage - its primary carers are retired
- Cost is not a particular issue, but we would like to keep it below £250. A used cage that is in reasonable condition is fine by us.

I also have a couple of questions
- What is the maximum bar spacing allowed for a Hahn's? I have seen several different figures. Would 20mm be OK? 22mm? I'm guessing that 25mm isn't, and have been discounting any cages with such wide widths.
- What is the minimum cage size? I've been going for cages that are around 2 foot x 3 foot (60x90cm) and above (on the principle that bigger is better, within reason)
- How important is a playtop? Would something similar (perhaps one of these attached to the side + some toys + food & water?)
- Really silly question - can open top cages be shut? We don't want to end up in a situation where we can't contain him when we go out!

We have narrowed it down to a shortlist, and would like your opinions (and suggestions for any cages that may be better (and are available in the UK!)):

Bigger will almost always equal better for the bird. With a hahns macaw structural integrity isn't as important as it is with the larger macaws becuase obvioulsly the hahns/noble's don't share the same strength that their big bros. and sisters posses. But they'll chew the heck out something so avoid the gages with the wood bars.

Sounds like your looking at good sizes. Don't worry at all about a play top. Your bird will play where he wants anyways. Auggie rarely uses his play top - he does walk across it regularly, but it's just not a spot he spends much time. As long as he has other places there is no need for this - but of course they are common and don't hurt any.

Bigger is always best and I have bought 3 or 4 bigger cages for my Noble Macaw( which is almost the same as a Hahn's,I thought mine was a Hahn's for the first 4 years until I got him a much better Doctor) and he will not give up his cage, which is about 2 x 3 feet. He's sleeping now or I would measure his cage for you. Rather than a play top, get a very high chair and make him a little house out of a cardboard box so when he goes in you can't see him. They love to be alone once in awhile but not for long.I made my birds cardboard house and put it a little higher than my head then put a soft cotton 1" halter rope (for a horse) between his cage and the house. He loved it and got exercise on top of it.I'll measure his cage and give it to you tomorrow if you want. He's been loving that cage for 14 years now.By the way, the cardboard house is not in these pictures as they are from when we first moved here.

Here is Charlies Living room cage. He really doesnt use the toys much at all. His favorite pass time is climbing all over the place. I hide pieces of paper all around his cage and he loves to go find them.
